I hope he is still in good health and Amtrak is no retirement job its a suicide mission for a man of his age. Anyone who goes from private industry to Public Federal Goverment Service is in for a shock of their life. Norfolk Southern could go to investors and customers to get capital funding. Amtrak can only go to Congress and the President. Never has so much has to be done with so little.
Well, if he doesn't like it and can't get any co-operation and can't make any headway he can always walk away. No-ones chaining him to the directors desk, and he sure doesn't need the $1 a year salary.
I suspect Mr. Wick took the job because he thinks it's going to be fun, and I hope it is for him. If he has fun with Amtrak the rest of us will.
Interesting how this Norfolk Southern executive is following a similar path to that of former Southern Rwy. CEO W. Graham Claytor, Jr. (who however served a stint as Sec. Navy in the Carter Admin. before going) to Amtrak.

Reistrup had the advantage of some passenger-related experience: B&O/C&O as Director Passenger Traffic mid-60s. Later he went back to CSX 1997-2002 as VP Passenger Integration.

I disagree and would argue it is the other way around. I have moved between Private companies and the Federal Government, very easy move. Feds work at only 1/2 or 1/4 the pace of the private sector and overtime hours for the most part do not exist and deadlines are negotiable on the Fed side in a lot of cases. Federal work and for that matter State work is a lot less demanding than Private business work..........at least on the IT side of the fence. Can't speak directly for railroads
You miss a deadline or over run a budget for a private company in most cases your fired or even more draconian the project can be cancelled. On the Federal or State side, you'll be lucky to get a slap on the wrist unless it is often repeated behavior.
