Big train, big bridge

Bi-directional running Louisville to Cincinnati. The existing L&N (LCL) route, and now adding L&I to B&O. They are replacing the Flatrock River bridge next year north of the B&O crossing, and that will give them an additional Chicago Southeast routing. Are they lining up bi-directional running Chicago-Nashville?

They are replacing the Flatrock River bridge next year north of the B&O crossing, and that will give them an additional Chicago Southeast routing. Are they lining up bi-directional running Chicago-Nashville?

 

 

Some time back ( a couple of years ?) There was some FORUM discussion about CSX wanting to 'revive'  some of the former 'Heritage' lines that preceeded the formation of what is now CSX  (Nee:B&O, C&O, L&N, etc) .

    The discussion followed the News Releases of CSX reclaiming its lines in W.Va. from WATCO ( Allegheny& Ohio), and some aomw reports of 'work' on routes across Southern Ill. and into Indiana.   Nothing definitive, but mostly rumors...

     The goal then, that was reported was, for CSX to 're-establish' routes from the Mid-Atlantic to the Midwest.  [ The goals were apparently to some how avoid the Chicago 'Bottleneck' (?) and open another 'gateway'  North of the Memphis,Tn. area .(?)   IIRC , all that happened after the announced 'partnership' between KSC and NS surrounding the 'Meridian Speedway': [320 miles betwn Meridian and Shreveport @ about  $300 Million ] (?).  

   Maybe, by putting some of their 'former pieces' back together and inproving some 'secondary ' (?) lines . they might accomplish another route, an alternative to ones that NS and BNSF, they CSX might give their competition; just That ! (?)

The L&I routing from Louisville to Seymour,IN to Cincinnati is the effective replacement of the former B&O routing through North Vernon, IN that had been abandoned in favor of the L&N line between Cincinnati and Louisville.  CSX found the traffic on the L&N line overwhemed it's physical plant and I expect found it would be more cost effective to invest $100M in the L&I route to Seymour as a means of adding capacity on this 'corridor'.

The ex-L&N line between Cincy and Louisville is notably ill-suited to pick up extra capacity -  lots of grades ( it crosses a drainage pattern with signficant elevation challenges) and short sidings.   Usining the L&I to Seymour, then east on the B&O to Cincinnati remove the grades ( the only significant grade is down-hill eastbound) makes a lot of sense.

Oops!  That would mean that they would have to cut through the fill and sewage disposal station that I built on the R/W just west of the former diamond with the NYC/Conrail/NS/Kanawa Valley.
