That might be it, but if so, then there was a typo with the caption as it calls it as north of Greybull.

If this is it, then there has be considerable reworking of the area.  The photo is simply stunning, in a book of stunning photographs.  The exit area is solid black, almost looks like coal (which it might be).  Obviously the area you linked has been impounded with a dam, so there might have been considerable work done to the area.

I will keep looking.

MP173 (6-8):

Hi, Ed!

First, Greybull, WY is a Zip Code (82426), and so is Wind River Canyon, WY (82443).

Second, Wind River Canyon is SOUTH of Greybull.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Greybull,+WY/Wind+River+Canyon,+Wyoming+82443/@44.0338804,-108.6409415,176750m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x534bc7b09dc6686b:0x7d7cee6393792d4f!2m2!1d-108.0562132!2d44.4891239!1m5!1m1!1s0x534cac4ecc9a3fa7:0xf2ac2b07fab2d817!2m2!1d-108.2128762!2d43.5794011

In the Wind River Canyon area is a north portal:

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4181024,-108.1762332,87m/data=!3m1!1e3

South portal:  Strange alignment, unless there is another south portal in the area.

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4001077,-108.1653046,87m/data=!3m1!1e3

My guess is the north and south confusion was a typo.

It is hoped that the above solves your mystery.  If not, at least I found something similar for you to chew on …

Best,

K.P.

Richard Steinheimer has a photo in his "Passion for Trains" (Plate 35) taken "north of Greybull" (Wy) in which Burlington train 29 is exiting from a wood lined tunnel in Wind River Canyon.

A challenge for me is to locate Steinheimer's photo spots for his photos.  My guess is the "wood lined tunnel" is long gone.

Does anyone know where this spot might have been?  The photo is a stunning example of the photographer's ability to incorporate the natural settings with the railroad.

This book is excellent.  I picked it up at a used book store for $30.
