Second-hand GE's being exported to South America
Posted by CSSHEGEWISCH on Saturday, December 4, 2004 10:03 AM
I've noticed in this forum and elsewhere that several Brazilian carriers (MRS, ALL, EFVM, etc) have been buying old GE's for service. MRS previously bought a batch of ex-SP rebuilt SD40's (7300's) and SD45's (7400's) for service on their broad-gauge lines but everything since then is GE.

Are the various Brazilian roads getting a better price for old GE's compared to old EMD's since there is minimal demand for old GE's in the United States?

Can their rails take the axle loading of U.S. locos or do they modify them?

Used GEs are cheap. Last I heard you could get dash 7s in the neighborhood of $45K or even cheaper with Dash8s when available being somewhat more expensive. Typically even old EMDs in average condition are going for over $50K.

They modify them to a BB+BB set...four two axel trucks made there.
And, to add to the fun, quite a lot of Brazils trackage is dual guage, narrow and meter guage.
We ship quite a bunch of old GEs to them on a regular basis, have one in our tie up track right now, waiting for a few others to catch up to it, a old BN C30-7 out of Alliance....

Got a few photos of the Brazalian motors in use, a friend down there sends me a bunch every week, anyone interested email me, and I will send them on to you...
Quite a sight to see a C30-7 on narrow guage BB+BB trucks!
Looks like it ought to just fall over all on it's own.

thanks a lot for the pictures, ed. they really look nice.

interesting, that brasilian customers did not bother to repaint all the engines they acquired. they must have major changes at the frames, and at the electric part, too. except, if only six axles are powered.

Do you have any pictures of the ex-SP locomotives? If so, what paint scheme were they in and were they mangled yet?

The ex-SP EMD's were rebuilt again by NRE for MRS Logistica and were shipped in MRS blue and yellow. I photographed three of them at NRE in Dixmoor about three years ago. I would opine that the MRS blue and yellow is a better color scheme than most of what is currently seen in North America.

Brazilian railroads are mostly meter-gauge with a substantial amount of broad-gauge (5'3") trackage. I'm not sure of axleload limitations.

Excellent pictures, Ed. It's interesting to see how EFVM modifies basic North American designs to fit meter gauge, both from the factory (DDM45's and BB40-9M's) and from their own shops. Considering the tonnage they move (it's a Brazilian DM&IR), it's probably a necessity.
