I think BNSF got rights over the LA&SL so two railroads would competitively serve those customers with the UP and SP merger of some years back, and I saw a number of the BNSF trains on the LA&SL as a result, but haven’t seen such of late. I guess they run at night now, typically when I’m not out that way.
I can’t remember why now I was traversing Cajon Pass at midnight, but not too long ago I saw a BNSF train on UP’s ex-SP Palmdale Cutoff, probably in the Canyon area. I use to see those BNSF trains on UP tracks quite frequently, but haven’t seen them of late.
Apparently, such trains are night runners now, so your observation of BNSF rights on the LA&SL might explain why a BNSF-looking train was involved in the Riverside Streeter Ave. area night incident.
Take care,

K. P. HarrierThe tracks belong to Union Pacific, but the night vision view almost gave the locomotive a BNSF warbonnet look.
BNSF's 2013 California Operating Division map lists that segment as one they have trackage rights on, so it could have been a BNSF train.
This forum contributor is quite familiar with the area of the incident, but even so was not able to pinpoint the incident’s exact location from the helicopter aerial views. The tracks belong to Union Pacific, but the night vision view almost gave the locomotive a BNSF warbonnet look. The fool must have been really stoned because it is recalled the ballast is quite high in the area, and it is very, very easy to discern where vehicles should and should not be.
A strange incident, but good for all involved but the vehicle driver.
40 ft is pretty close.
