My wife made me post this, sorry
Posted by gabe on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 12:33 PM
Members of the forum, sorry to bother you with this, but: My wife told me to post this. Given that there are two ways to argue with a woman, and neither of them work, I thought I would just post it.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/11/30/btk.killer.ap/index.html

There is a serial murderer who has a fascination with trains and is currently on the run. My wife works with criminal justice organizations and thought there is an outside chance that this person would ring a bell with someone on the forum.

Sorry again to be a bother,

Gabe

Don't be sorry. As a member of the legal profession you of all folks would be aware of some of the surprising and unlikely sources that leads come from.

Gabe,

You're not being a bother; your wife has wisdom. This sounds rather important, and if it helps to prevent another crime, then you have done the world a service.

Its a shame that there are people sick enough out there to do things like this guy has done I hope he gets caught and then tortured and killed the way he did to his victims.

Gabe, this is no bother, it is a good thing to make people aware of this in hopes to catch him.

Makes me wonder about railfans, again...

Still, it is no bother to me. Wonder who the Special Agent involved with the mother is/was?

I was thinking of posting it myself. I used to live in and watch trains in Wichita, and believe me, catching BTK would be the greatest thing ever.
for those of you who aren't familiar with the case, this guy is a serial killer who has been around since the 1970s - yep, more than 30 years on the loose - and is very much the stuff of nightmares.
When I found out he's a railfan, well, I just did not want to post here at first.

I know what you mean Ifish, about not wanting to post it here. In the same breath, if he is really that much into trains, maybe my wife has a point. Besides that, I have to pick my arguments carefully, and this one didn't make the cut.

While the idea that the guy standing next to you admiring the latest motive power may be a serial killer is certainly creepy, remember that he probably buys groceries, too...

For that matter, he's admitted (albeit anonymously) to the killings. How many others are there out there that that haven't?

serial killers usually admit to their killings on some level. It is part of the profile. The killings are usually part of their--disturbed--message. Accordingly, they have some intrinsic need to claim authorship.

Don't be sorry, i'm actually suprised that Kalmbach didn't post this in the trains news on the starting page to catch interest.

And this guy has it in spades, Gabe. For the longest time, nobody was aware that various murders were the work of one serial killer, and it clearly irked him and he made sure that all of Kansas knew about him in the 1970s.
The authorities have tried to use this to their advantage over the years, but nothing came of it.
Now, he has taken to writing letters again, apparently just to remind us all that, like Osama, he's never been caught. And he seems to be deliberately feeding as many clues as possible.
It's quite grim, of course, but pretty fascinating. If BTK had chosen to operate in someplace other than Wichita, a lovely city and my hometown but, let's face it, the middle of nowhere, nobody would need Hannibal Lecter to give them the heebie jeebies.

Remember Mendez, the Texas Railroad killer from a few years back?

Wonder how many lives would have been saved if this much info was published about him, and a fan reconized him from it.

I saw that when I was listening to Bush address Halifax with Paul Martin. Interesting indeed; sounds like some Cold Case Squads are going to have to do some investigations.

I thought it was Rafael Ramirez. Too bad they did not meet. One serial killer killing another.

Ed, Realize that all this information is from him and may not be real facts, but instead may be false information to taunt the police down a wrong path. Take it with a grain of salt, but be wary and report anyone you think fits the information, every lead helps the police in some way.

Wichita police arrested a suspect last night in South Wichita. This is huge news. The news accounts add that there are train tracks 40 yards from the house. Depending on precisely where in S. Wichita this is, it's probably the BNSF, ex-SF.

My wife will be thrilled. She made me post this, and the guy was caught that night. Clearly a cause and effect relationship.

Gabe

P.S. I hope there are no strange absences from any members of the forum to raise an eyebrow.

I'm glad you posted it, Gabe, and glad that you listen to your wife.
Between you and me, I' m dying to make a few wise guy observations about all this, but The Authorities could justifiably take a dim view, so I will refrain.

To give you an idea how long this guy has been terrorizing Wichita, when he first started, a big part of the railroad action in town was on the Rock Island, and the MIssouri Pacific handled a big part of the wheat harvest.

My wife is an attorney, instead of a gun she uses her power of "contempt." She has yet to sustain one of my objections to it.

Ah, someday . . .
