Many thanks to everyone for the welcome and great suggestions on researching and building my layout. You have all given me some work to do.

Obviously a great forum with knowledgeable and friendly people.

Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum. You might try attending the various model train shows that usually come up in the fall, but there are others throughout the year. To find out, go to Panther Hobbies in Mississauga, they have flyers for all the shows and there are always book vendors at them.

That sounds like the experience that a friend of mine and I had at Spadina in 1983.  We were shooting pictures from the overpass when the foreman saw us and waved us down.  We signed a waiver, were issued safety helmets, got a short safety lecture, were advised of what was off limits, and went on our way.  When we were done, we returned the helmets, thanked the foreman, and left.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

If you want photos of the site during the 1970s and 1980s try surfing around railpictures.net and railpictures.ca, there are many excellent shots of the Spadina roundhouse and yards online there and elsewhere.  The roundhouse was known for having a very lenient policy on photographers, there was an article in a recent Classic Trains issue where the author recalled showing up, being issued a hard hat and given a brief safety lecture (the foreman told him "don't get hurt"), and then being given free run of the place.  Good luck with your layout.

I'm sure a Google search will find others . . .

Go to your local library and look for "Steam at Allandale".. a wonderful book with lots of photos of steam in and around Toronto, mostly from the 1950s. I'm not sure if the book is still in print, but there are lots of photos of stations and of Oakville and Toronto back then. Personally I most enjoy the photos of Bayview.. I go there alot in the summer, and seeing how it looked in the 50s and comparing to now is interesting.

Articles About Toronto Stations & Yards
Posted by Spadina Yard Master on Thursday, February 4, 2016 11:57 AM

Hello Everyone. I'm new and this is my first post. I have been searching for magazine articles on the steam era Toronto, Ontario stations and yards as I am very interested in building a layout depicting this area and era. I haven't had much luck and was wondering if anyone can help me. Thank you in advance. Cheers,
