Ah, those were the days.

I saw mention recently that the Classic Trains Forum had a real, operating search function for all the forums.  I had to try that out!  It took no time at all to find a thread that was one of my favorites.  Here is the link:

Chicago & Northwestern the non-transcontinental

This is from January, 2008, and has sort of a *good old days* feel to it.  7922 views, 107 replies by 24 different posters.  Civil, interesting discussion, folks that knew their stuff, lots of questions, and nobody was called a big maroon!

     Ah, those were the days.

(edit- got it worked out to make the link work)

Murphy, see this discussion in MRR forum to make links active:

http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/247876/2765013.aspx#2765013

Scroll up a couple of entries.   It involves brackets, slashes and "url"s.

OK, I tried it again with the brackets and stuff:

http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/247876/2765013.aspx#2765013

(edit): I'll be dagnabbed, it didn't work.   I've used it before....

http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/247876/2765013.aspx

(edit again): This time it worked.  When I removed the number after the "aspx" which made it go to the beginning of the thread, it worked.   Wonders of modern technology!

Bang Head.........Dunce

In the 'Post Body' screen, there are, or should be, three rows of editing tools.  Top row has word identified actions and drop down boxes for those actions.
2nd row has other actions suchs a BOLD, Italics etc.
3rd row has Icons for actions - the 2nd block from the left, has a Icon to add a link - when clicked use of that action should be self explanatory.

Honest to goodness, I have 3 rows.

First row is file...edit...etc

Second row is Left arrow....Right arrow...etc

Third row is Cut...Copy...Past...Preview...Emoticon.....Text color..Font familiy...Font size...That's it.

Do you have an icon that looks like 3 links of a chain at a diagonal?  Or maybe that is a pair of reading glasses at an angle... icons don't always produce the same mental understanding that the designer intended!  It is the 4th icon in the bottom row for me, next to a square with a silhouette of a mountain range and a "sun"(?) and next to that a representation of a frame from a movie "film".  Those latter two icons are for inserting images and videos (respectively).  Click on the "chain link" (or glasses) icon and you get a dialog for entering the URL of the link to insert.

Also... if you have a text menu at the top ("File", "Edit", etc.) the 3rd one should be "Insert"... click on it and a menu will drop down providing the same options as the icons.

All I ever do to activate a link is put the cursor after the link, and hit return.  It works every time.

I have no link icon in any way, shape or form.

My text menu along the top reads:
File... Edit.... View...Format   That's it.

Took me a minute to find the setting...'

Over on the right of each page on this site is a square box that has your avitar and user name... under your user name are two links... "Manage Profile" and "Settings"... click "Settings".

You will get a new page that has some info and settings. At the top of the group on the left will be some tabs... click the "Advanced Options" one.

You will get a list of options, the 2nd one down is "Content Editor"... click the box to the right of that line and select 'Enhanced'.  Then go to the bottom of the page and click the blue "Save" button.

Now you should see the more extensive editing aids.  (Hope hope hope!) Geeked

Some browsers don't display all the icons on the 3rd row - for what ever reason - a Kalmbach quirk.

The 3rd row icons are - (left to right)

Cut  Copy  Paste  Insert Link  Insert Picture  Insert Video  Full Screen  Preview Post  Emoticons  Text Color  Font Family  Font Sizes

Thanks Paul of Covington, BaltACD and Semper Vaporo for the help.  With your clues, info on the testing forum, a lot of trial and error, and a fair amount of cussing I made it work.  It might be the software, but more likely it's an operator error.

I learned a long time ago to always blame the computer... computers can't be insulted and people can so blaming the computer saves face for all.

Remember, computers are neither smart nor dumb... they are just plain MEAN!

What is MEAN is Kalmbach's continual reinvention of forum software and all the issues that it causes each time they 'do maintenance' and something that worked doesn't and something that didn't work now does.  Plus the fact that different forum areas under the Kalmbach umbrella have different forum software packages.
