Opinions on new Trains' cover?

I do not like it. It has to be one of the worst covers ever.

This new cover design somehow looks cheaper. Even a thin outline (black or white, depending on background) would improve things. The shadow effect behind the lettering on the May cover was good, but didn't go far enough.

Inside, I wish I could read Don Phillips on one page (or a two-page spread) instead of having to flip for both it and whatever other articles are on the same spreads.

I"m with you, it is extremly annoying to have to flip through half of the magazine to finish an article. Thank goodness that Classic Trains is picking up the slack, that is my favorite magazine now. To give Trains credit, it has to be extremly tough to fill a magazine with diverse articles when there are only a handfull of class ones left with little variety in the industry, except regional topography.

Well said. The cover strikes my as cheesey. If I want to flip pages to finish an article I'll pick up the newspaper. (Except there aren't any articles about RAILROADING in that!)

I think they ought to go back to the red rectangle with a white "TRAINS" in it like Kalmbach used for most of the magazine's existence. Constantly changing logos does NOT help newsstand sales!

Roger that, it sounds as if someone must be very confused on the design staff. I would vote for the old cover. I realize that they are trying to drum up sales, but I think the old fashioned approach of providing better material INSIDE the magazine might be more productive.

I agree. The cover looks too, too, I can't even think of a word for what I'm getting. Okay, maybe cheap? I liked the last cover a lot better. I've had a subscription for 20 years, so never had to look for it on a newstand, but it would seem the last cover with the red logo would get more interest than the new one. That new diagonal logo seems too Cosmo or Vogue or falsely flashy. I just don't like it. It would be better if they would just put the logo on straight rather than canted. The font is ok, just the angled logo is goofy.
The cover is about my only complaint. I like the turn towards being almost a trade publication with the industry ads for components and services. These have definitely increased over the last couple of years, giving it a slightly more in-depth edge over the other fan mags.
I do miss the declining classic articles, though that is the trade odd I suppose.

I do not like it at all.I must agree it does look cheap.While I am lambasting Trains on their new cover I will go one step farther.ATTENTION TRAINS,Why doesn't Ed King have a monthly column?IMHO he is one of the BEST columnist you have.How about some more of his great railroad stories?

I guess they are going the way the railroads are.Some are changing for a cheaper scheme.
