    My interests lean more towards diesel locomotives, not steam.  What I'd like to find is detail along these lines:

I suggest not clicking on anything that comes up under that search term.  It looked innocent enough.  

I clicked on the British Raul Class 47 Brush Locomotive, The Battle of Britian Class, the SAR Class 15CA - no problems. However, you may be correct regarding the first image in the search results, I got an AVG warning, so maybe it's wonky. Use your discretion

If the OP is looking for actual books, there is a trains chapter in "Visual Wonders - Ships, Trains, and Planes" (Whitecap Books - c2000) with large images of the trains in question (The General, Mallard, The Canadian, etc) with associated cutaway drawings of said trains. I am sure there are other such books out there, from the 1980s to the turn of the century was a great era of colorful technology "picture books" like "Stephen Biesty's Incredible Cross-Sections", which while it does include a steam locomotive and a tube train, has lots of other such cross-sections (many with silly visual jokes like the train passenger sitting on the toilet; oddest is the T-34 tank, with the Tank commander bisected along with the turrrent, showing his lower half with guts and spine displayed...)

     I have a book of WWII warplanes that shows details of the inner workings of the planes without the outter skin.  I'm fascinated by the structure of what holds things up, or together, so seeing the frames, engines, etc. is appealing to me.  It allows me to vizualize how the pieces fit together. Does anyone know of a similar type book or website related to locomotives?
