Today I got to see the ole' Rio Grande units working. An empty coal train being lead by a Rio Grande gp40-2? and a Hi-hood ex NS Operation lifesaver gp-40. Both were in original paint excpet for reporting marks and the NS unit's nose stripes painted RIo Grande Orange. To bad I didn't have a camera. This was on a run through on Csx's New Castle sub done by Wheeling and Lake Erie.

P.s. Nora- Lucky you I would love to live near any good size yard

Talk about a surprise, I saw an old DRG&W tunnel motor on the Wisconsin & Southern last summer going through Slinger, WI.

Well, yes, I know, but since my main point of reference is NS's Conway Yard...that one is LITTLE! [:D]

I pass that yard every day on my way to school. It's hard to get photo's of that railroad. They keep the Rio Grande paint job but freshen up the paint and put Wheeling and Lake Erie on the side. For the longest the wheeling and lake erie has been running ex-Rio Grande loco's. They have also been using neat lease units of lately and some emd demonstrators? There are some EMD lease unit's and a GATX unit. Still a small drop in the bucket compared to csx leasing.

Another point of interest is the in the first photo to the right is an old turntable pit. It isn't used anymore to turn the engines but it looks as if it is stil used to service the engines

Nora- That's actually Akron's big yard. A little further away is the csx akron hill yard. Small stub ended yard in a little ravine. Ex-b&o of course. You can usually find two caboose sitting in there. One ex CR and on ex chessie. They are hard t ospot through the trees though.

I have seen those several times now, in that same yard. Every time we go to see my parents we pass right by there. Pretty neat, I like that little yard.

If going to the WLE keeps them in DRGW paint, I am all for them going. Of course they will probably not be coming around here.

It looks like the bottom engine looks like #301 or 318. I don't know.

That's more than I have seen around here recently. The last ones that I saw here were two doing switch work in the UP yard in Denver. And from the photos, it looks like those are in better shape than the two here.

it's kinda hard to get good shots of the Wheeling & Lake Erie yard in Akron, Ohio while wandering down I-76, but here are some of their latest locomotives from the Rio Grande

here is a Geep and a SD40T-2

and another Geep that already has the new numbers.
