Cascade Green?
Posted by Murphy Siding on Monday, November 9, 2015 8:48 PM

With all the grain moving in the upper plains, we're starting to see some out of the ordinary locomotive stock on the BNSF.  Recently, I've seen a few Warbonnets, a Greinstein (sp?) Green locomotive, and several older units (SD-40-2's?) still in Cascade Green. Anybody else seeing Cascade Green?

All the time. A good portion of BNSF's 4-axle power is still in Cascade Green, with one or two Yellowbonnets still around.

Here in the Twin Cities, I see BNSF SD-60's still in BN colors (but relettered for BNSF) once in a while. As it happens, CP still uses some SD-60's here too, but those are still wearing the Soo Line all-red scheme and lettering.

  How far northwest are you?

Not as far north as the avatar would indicate-I'm north of Seattle but south of the border.

Executive SD70MACs and HI and HII locomotives are common as well, but their numbers have begun to dwindle. I'll miss all of the varied paint when all the road power sadly becomes HIII.

Murphy - slide on down the hill and we will get burgers/dogs and I will show you a whole lot of color.  We either have it or it runs thru here.  Bring your sunglasses!

Some folks  have all the luck.  Heck- they probably sent Lincoln our Cascade Green GP-30 that used to live in the local yard.

Heck - I miss the variety now...  If it weren't for the leasers...

Unfortunately the YN2 units seem to be really dwindling now-glad I caught them when I could.

Enjoying it while it lasts...

The grain season is about the only time I see much that's not pumpkin orange with occasional Cascade Green.  About this time I year I get to see a few Cp, CN,lease locomotives, and an occasional UP unit.  At most, I'd bet I haven't seen more than a couple NS or CSX locomotives-ever.  Apparantly, someone down south of me is hogging all the pretty locomotives. Hmm

Day before yesterday, I saw an intermodal train going west through Rochelle with two NS and one CSX engine--no BNSF power!

Got the better weather, too!  Kisses

Makes you wonder if a BNSF train with NS and CSX power ever meets a UP train with BNSF and KCS power?

It does occur to me that before the modern era, run-through power wasn't as common (and in the steam era, not at all?).  Aside from the "Alphabet Route" and a few other instances, all you'd ever see on a given line was the home road.  For the years I lived near the current CSX Saginaw Sub, I never saw a locomotive that wasn't C&O.

Maybe we should be grateful...

UP units are very common in Tallahassee.  Have seen one or two KCS units, and one or two BNSF.  Have seen a few leasers.  Not a lot of variety.

I do not get up there very often, but have seen UP units on the Horseshoe Curve.  Has anyone seen any BNSF units on the curve?
