Early Morning Shot on the Moffat (1 IMG)
Posted by CopCarSS on Monday, September 21, 2015 9:17 AM

Spent yesterday morning out on the Moffat Line. I didn't do as well with the fall color as I would have liked, but I did manage to get a pretty nice morning shot as I was headed up that way:

Chop off the upper two thirds and make it landscape mode.

As usual, outstanding.

Looking through the rest of the shots, I get the feeling the baboon has posed for a camera once or twice before!

Chris never fails to amaze.

While I agree with Norm's comment, to a point, the shot also points up the relative smallness of these huge machines.

Yawn.  Stretch arms out.  Rub eyes.  Gee, is it morning already?  What am I even doing up at this hour?

All kidding aside, sunrise or shortly thereafter is a wonderful time for outdoor photography.  I'd say that Chris has proved my point.  Love the skyline in the distance.

True.  But why am I suddenly hungry for Froot Loops?

Looking at the other photo's, the water tower night scene is excellant.  As to the above, keep it as is, the cloud deck adds to the depth of the scene. Nice piece of work!

Chris, on your photo's lower right, is that the Denver skyline?

As framed, it is really a Big Sky picture.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

Thank you for all the kind words! To answer a few questions:

The photo was framed vertically for a couple of reason. The biggest was that the pre-sunrise sky was simply stunning! I had hoped that the train would have arrived about 5 minutes earlier, in which case the clouds would have been a sumptuous blend of pinks and reds.

Even though that didn't happen, I still liked the vertical composition. There was a bit of negative space that kind of emphasized the size relationships like Tree and Balt mentioned. It's an interesting play between the train, the city and the huge sky that dominates both. Plus I have other shots with the landscape framing like Norm mentioned, so I thought I'd try something a little different so that all my shots don't look alike.

K.P. - Yes, that is the Denver in the lower right hand corner.

Nicely done Chris.

How far out of Denver was it taken?

Do you ever go to canyon on Rt 34 between Granby and Hot Sulpher Springs?  We were out to Colorado this summer and that was quite a view.

Also...really enjoy your astronomy shots.  I have been out several nights lately with my telescope and binocs.  Great time of the year.

Keep the photos rolling!

Ed,

This is just a little past Leyden siding. Leyden is Milepost 12.4, IIRC. So maybe about 13 railroad miles out?

I have been on that route, but it's been a long time. I really should get out that way again one of these days.

I'm always happy astronomically this time of year. While we're losing the great views of the Milky Way, it's nice to see Orion back. I really want to work on my tracking setup to get a better shot of M42 this year. I got a couple last year, but nothing too spectacular. I realize there are more shots of M42 than anyone can ever want. Still, it would be fun to have a really nice shot hanging on my wall that I can say "I took that."

Well, with a super moon and eclipse happening on the 27th, I expect you will have something to hang on your wall the 28th.

And hopefully something to post here as well!
