Non Interchange Cars

I would guess that the car might be in captive service of some sort but even an intermodal flat could eventually be downgraded to M/W service.  During a major project at Chicago Union Station, intermodal flats lettered for Amtrak were used to move ready-mix trucks to the location where the concrete was being poured.

Non-interchange cars should be able to run on any railroad agreeing to handle it. Presumably NS has an agreement with BNSF allowing the operation of these cars on NS. Interchange equipment can be offered to any common carrier railroad for interchange. Non-interchange equipment must be kept on home roads or on roads for which a special agreement has been reached to handle the car. This applies to equipment exceeding a certain age, or any equipment that does not meet other mechanical requirements for interchange service, as I suspect is the case here. There may also be some other ownership or legal reasons that a railroad may not want cars in general interchange service, but I am not sure how that works."

Hello,

I have a picture of a CP intermodal car #527728. There is stencilled on the side: "Non-Interchange Car See Equipment Register".

Not having a Register I wonder if anyone would know the reason why?
