All Aboard to Chicago's Navy Pier
Posted by zardoz on Tuesday, November 23, 2004 5:54 AM
I received this notice in the mail yesterday. I have not attended, so I cannot vouch for the quality of the display. I am just passing this along.

The following is information provided in the brochure:

"All aboard to Chicago's Navy Pier, for one the midwest's most spectacular FREE holiday train layouts.
"Relive the route of the Streamliners from New York to Chicago.
"Amazing scenery.
"Magnificent buildings.
"Spectacular day-to-night lighting.
"25 trains in 'O' and 'HO'.
"All under a stunning 30-foot tall Victorian Train Station.

The brochure also says there are 170,000 square feet of "Holiday Family Fun", such as ice skating, rides & slides, climbing wall, cookie decorating, musical carousel, and 'more'.

The event takes place from December 10 to January 2.m
The address is 600 E. Grand Ave.; Chicago 60611.
Phone: 800-595-PIER.
Web site: www.navypier.com
Admission is free.

I've seen it last year - it's pretty nice - but if you have time to see only one 'layout' in Chicago - go see the one at the Museum of Science and Industry.

I went a few years ago and wasn't too impressed. Seemed to walk forever through a HOT and CROWDED Navy Peir with the kids and inlaws. The event is a winter carnival with things for kids (ice skating, games, etc.). There was 1 moderate layout that was OK, but IMHO not worth it. The advertisement in the mail had me expecting more. We all came away disappointed.

Don't you wish you could still get "all aboard" for a train to Navy Pier? The first time I was ever on Navy Pier it was on a yard job! Now you can't even get across the river and under the Merchandise Mart.

Saw an article about a layout in the Hancock building as well. Sounds like a trip downtown is in order again, of course with a stop at MSI.[:D]
