It's gone now, but earlier this morning I'm sure I saw an adverisement right here on the Trains website for LimoLiner. And with the tag line, "Cheaper than Acela." Is nothing sacred! http://www.limoliner.com/

Sounds like a Google AdSense ad... I'll have that site blocked.

Sounds like a good idea though, anything is better that helps get more one person vehicles of the road.

Some outfit (not these folks, AFAIK) run a dirt-cheap shuttle between DC and New York City. I've forgotten the rates, but it's something like $25 one-way. The only saving grace is that they load on the street and in the article I read the departure times were rather inconvenient (although I've seen what I think are the cheap buses leaving at a more reasonable hour). Kind of interesting that on the one I saw there was no corporate name or logo or anything else that would make identification easy.

I caught that off a pop-up somewhere but I don't think it was from this site. You would think that such ads would be targeted to a welikebuses.com type of site and forum. (Hey, the internet has something for everybody!) I don't remember if a schedule was provided, but I can't imagine it beats the Acela. Anyway, how could you get out of your seat and walk up to the lounge car?

Way back in 1960 Trailways introduced Golden Eagle Service between Los Angeles and Seattle. This bus served all meals but breakfast on board and also had two tables in the rear of the bus and the seats were more spacious than regular buses and they even had a fresh flower at each seat pair between the windows. These buses also carried a stewardess and the service was faster than the railroads offered by almost ten hours Not bad for 1960 so what is LIMOLINER offering besides the computer plug in and that wasn't available forty-four years ago. When they discontinued the GOLDEN EAGLE service I stopped riding buses. One other thing I don't ever remember the GOLDEN EAGLE service being late, more than I can say for today's COAST STARLIGHT.

Actually the market is pretty well tapped. Check out the ride for any touring celebrities!

LimoLiner is a rather well-done outfit... and no, a bus need not be 'a bus' -- ever see those over-the-top Prevosts that big entertainment stars sometimes ride in? Think about the difference between a commuter gallery car, and how Colorado Railcar rebuilds gallery cars...

There were some articles on the LimoLiner startup a while back. They used the Hampton Jitney as one of their service models, IIRC. If you want to see another interesting version of custom-bus transportation, look at the very early buses used by La Cubana out of New York -- custom-built in Italy, and unlike anything else I've seen on American roads!

Doesn't compete with Acela on speed... but is definitely competitive in end-to-end niche markets that aren't near stations on the NEC...

... and no, it isn't a train, yes, it competes with trains, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily a Bad Thing. The "bad thing" is that Google sent an anti-rail link to a railroad site, which doesn't say much for either their ad people or their programmers... ;-}
