Washington, DC - New/Future "Metropolitan Branch" Bike Trail

last week in the Washington Post:
The Washington DC 'Red Line' is opening a new metro station about 3/4-mile north of Union Station (in a gap between two existing stations). The metro runs above ground parallel to Amtrak's NEC in this area. There is also a short stretch of the parallel 'Metropolitan Branch' bike trail that has opened in the area.
There are plans to extend the bike trail for eight miles along the metro route/diverging CSX (ex-B&O) route that heads north-northwest in the area.
