I would also recommend CP Hair in Dalton. Park on the top level of the parking garage (there's only one) which is right next to the junction and will allow you to see some of the signals. There are two restored depots on either side of the garage, one a restaurant and the other for tourists, including train watchers with speakers connected to scanners for both CSX and NS, and ATCS monitors that are visible even if the depot is closed. If you are taking "non-train" family with you, don't go on Sunday as the downtown shopping will be closed, or go on Sunday to save money... Here is the address for one depot. http://www.thedaltondepot.net/contact-info.html. The parking garage is just south of it.
Have fun!

Please note that the Frograil reviews of railfan sites are 11 to 16 years old. There have been a great many changes to infrstructure in those years, but not so much to the tracks. The diretions to locations are pretty much ok, I think.
If you have never driven in Georgia, be aware that a great many locals consider traffic signals and Stop signs as only advisory and speed limits as minimus, especialy in the Atlanta area.
Be sure to have grits and gravy with your bacon and eggs in the morning.Enjoy your trip to Georgia and good hunting.
NS has a hump yard in Macon, with lines radiating from it like fingers on a hand. Haven't ever been there, but there should be plenty of traffic if you can find a spot to watch it.
chicagorails greetings ...dont want to go inside atlanta too dangerous. outside atlanta is there any busy routes.....would be great to see 50 60 70 in 24 hrs. thanx

That quote really hurts, considering Chicago's crime rate the past few years ;-)
Don't know if you have already risked life and limb down here in Georgia, but I agree that Austell is a good location. If that is too close to the criminal element in Atlanta(17.6 miles) a safer location may be Hair Junction in Dalton, GA(89.6 miles N/NW from Atlanta per Google).

Austell would be a good spot for traffic volume.
