CSX has decreed that only Mechanical Department personnel are allowed to add water to a engine that is running low on water.

Do you have any idea why they have made such a decision?  Perhaps to insure the proper anticorrosion chemicals are also added?

I don't know for certain; however, knowing the company culture - either someone got injured adding water or water was added to the wrong fluid.

Now if the Mechanical Dept would redouble their efforts to see that engines don't leak like seives and don't fail on line of road account tripping the low water alarm.

I'm betting injury.  If you don't properly vent the system before removing the cap, you can get scalded by escaping steam and hot water.

Ran down to Syracuse and picked up the radio I won a couple of weeks ago, followed by picking up lunch for daughter and family and enjoying that with them.

Was holding granddaughter for a bit before I left.  Mom asked if the youngster wanted to go to her, granddaughter signalled she didn't... (Chuckle)  She went to Mom a few minutes later.

Kids are so much fun!

Three hours in the dark on the 11th Floor - WooHoo! (and the cops and fire department (in full gear w/ Scott AirPaks) are still wandering around down below ... Utility HDD crew is catching flak from the cops...)

MC, I'd lobby for windows up there so you won't be in the dark.  Seriously, what happened?

We lucked out on an excursion away from the cottage yesterday.  At Baldwin (formerly an important crossroads on the Pere Marquette) we caught a train of PM's great-grandson, Marquette Rail, Inc.  The two SD40-2s were in Genesee & Wyoming colors, and were detached from everything, being refueled by a truck. The train would apparently be headed to either Ludington or Manistee, since it had a caboose as the easternmost car in town (its number, 3158, suggests that it was ex-C&O same; an extended-vision-cupola car in a faded but otherwise nice blue, red, and yellow paint scheme reminiscent of the old PM's locomotives).

While nothing was moving, I got a good closeup look at some of the company's box cars.  They've acquired a few since I last did this; many of the newer ones have the Finger Lakes Railway in their ancestry.  Still in the process of putting this story together, which is kind of difficult because of the lack of cell and internet at the cottage.

We go back home in a couple of days...I'm ready, but I'm not, yaknowutImean?

(1) We have 3 doors that open onto a good sized deck on the 11th Floor (there is a 12th floor above us with no outside access)

(2) We now know that a utilty crew (HDD/Horizontal Directional Drilling) managed to poke a hole in a transformer (buried in an underground vault - it blew up)...the dumb cowboys then compounded the problem by allowing drilling fluid to come in contact with the hot buried electric cable which suddenly made everything along the ground above the buried cable very electrically unstable. Expensive day for the contractor - hopefully nobody was hurt or burned.

Not to let der Chicken get ahead of me, we had somewhere around 2 inches of rain in a short time overnite, had blackout at the same time for about 7-8 hours (did get uncomfortably warm w/o any air or even ambient light to see that you were warm!)

But lights on about 8 am and turned out to be a good day (mid 80's).  Lunch trackside - lots of coal trains and some freight going in all directions.

Life is good!

We got home this evening to no rain (a total shock, after having seen downed tree-limbs from other folks in the village), and a lawn that needs to be attended to as soon as possible...after a memorial service, a trip to the post office, etc., etc.

Heard trains almost as soon as I opened the car door.  Can't wait to see them tomorrow!

Why is it that your grandchildren grow up faster than your own children did??

Raising your own kids is torture.  Playing with the grandkids (ie, spoiling them and leaving them for mom and dad to deal with) is a joy...  Devil

Our run to Big Moose Sunday morning was briefly interrupted by a small tree down with the topmost branches on the tracks.  As I alit from the locomotive to investigate, the reason the small tree had come down became apparent - a large, dead tree had come down and was leaning heavily on two other large trees, with the whole mess leaning over the tracks.

I was about to pull one of the larger branches of the small tree off the tracks when I heard a "crack" above me.  Found safer ground and moved what I had to off the tracks.  The trees still hadn't come down by the time we returned an hour and a half later, so now they're MOW's problem.

Fortunately, they're on a long section of tangent, so hitting them wasn't going to be a problem.

Decent weekend on the railroad - now it's time to get ready for the SPAAMFAA convention in Syracuse next weekend.

Fairly productive day - got the trailer inspected (it passed, but it's brand new...), got the new ham antenna mounted on the truck, got some laundry done.  The humidity dropped as the day went on, which was a good thing.  This morning one could break out in a sweat standing still...

The new antenna does pose a bit of a quandry for me.  While it'll be necessary to use all the capabilities of the new radio I won, it's too tall to fit in the garage, and isn't flexible enough to give.  So it'll have to come off when the truck goes back inside (it's been outside while I built the utility trailer).  I did order a new antenna that will handle the stuff I use the radio for most (2 meter and 70 cm), so the quad band antenna will simply get kept inside the truck unless I need it.

Tomorrow I load up the old wheeled fire extinguisher so I can take it to the SPAAMFAA convention in Syracuse Wednesday.  Our local chapter is helping out with the convention, too, so I'll probably be doing many things over the weekend.

For now, I've got to see if I can get the new radio programmed so I can move it into the truck...

Whistling Tree, maybe you could get a vertical locking hinge(folding type) to lower  the tenna. they sure are handy for low clearances (if you don't forget about it) 73s to you.

They make one for this antenna.  For the most part, though, I won't need the extended range (6 and 10 meters) around home - only when venturing further away.  Around here, 2 meters and 70 centimeters are the usual FM haunts.

So as soon as the new dual band antenna (different mounting base than the one I already have) shows up, it'll be on the truck most of the time, with the quad-band securely stowed in case I wander into an area with the other bands.

I did get the new quad-band radio all programmed and mounted in the truck.

I hear you there!  Worked up a sweat yesterday morning just standing around...

The humidity here at almost 5 PM stands at about 50%, which might not sound bad, but the temperature is about 90F.  For those of us living in the north woods, that's brutal.

Worked up a sweat today loading and unloading antique fire apparatus.  The indoor display at the SPAAMFAA convention now holds some 4 "hand tubs" (hand operatated pumpers), our local chapter's Howe/Remington horse-operated pumper, half a dozen hose carts, and a couple of wheeled soda-acid extinguishers.

The prize in the room is the parade hose reel owned by a local collector of note.  The vehicle was never intended to fight fire - indeed it was purely a showpiece, as the vast amounts of polished nickle and brass evidence.  I'll try to get a picture of it up here.  It's also the biggest piece in the room right now.

More of the convention all weekend, with a parade and muster on Saturday.

Last two days have been bad running from Virginia to Illinois, I think my air conditioning has condensed about 20 gallons of water out of the atmosphere........

Watching Truck Stop Follies tonight in Effingham, then picking up a scrap paper load to Green Bay tomorrow.  Hopefully will get something home from there..........

Tree:  Looks like an elegant carriage!

Elegant is an understatement.  These fire companies were very proud of their equipment, even though in this case (as I mentioned), it never actually fought fire.  I'm sure it got lots of interesting looks while in transit (and especially on the Interstate).  You can see three of the five bells in the picture.  They are on springs and ring whenever it hits a bump...

The fellow that owns it has quite a collection of such items.  Our club helped move a few of them to the site of the convention from his warehouse and the old firehouse where he keeps part of his collection.
