An interesting question that I never thought of
for a grade crossing signal in Int'l morse would be dash dash dot dash/
In American railway morse it's the opposite dot dot dash dot.
An interesting web site I just looked up is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_code
When I was an operator way back, For the letter "L" we would send a long dash, equal to two or three normal dashes. For the number "O" we used dot space dot, the same code as the letter "O"

Maybe you can help me out with this question... is it true that the standard "whistle" for grade crossings "--.-" is the same as the Morse greeting used on ham radio? ("Q")

Well I say thats not how I'd send it. As I learned it was . . . . . . . .

The first in international morse, and the second is railroad or American morse.
When the Titanic sank it sent out its distress signals in Int'l code and most of the landline stations used American code, so there was quite a bit of condfusion.
"s" is three dots "O" is dot space dot.

Just noticed I've now received my first star.
When I entered this forum in July I was computer illiterate and this was my first forum. I stupidly mentioned my password , mistaking it for my ID. Several of you kindly took me to task to which I said I would not be so stupid to enter my password. MY SINCERE APOLOGIES.
I've been a railfan for many years and thought I knew a lot about railroads, but since joining this forum I realize how little I know (we get too soon old and too late smart) Many thanks to all of you who have educated me these last few months.
