With some of the sad losses in recent decades, you don't even have to remember the end of the steam era to cringe just at the thought of this happening today.

I agree, it wasn't much of a joke.

Everybody has the right to post his or her idea of a joke, no matter how unfunny it may actually be.  I suspect the prank was pulled by some wet-behind-the-ears youngster who has never actually experienced the sadness of seeing a great steam locomotive being scrapped.  I was around when the last B&O EM-1 was cut up; and the last Erie Berkshire; and the last NYC Hudson and Niagara; and when the last PRR J1 and Duplexes were lost forever, so I see no humor in it.

To the joker:  May you never see the things I have seen.

Are you the owner of the MRPS? Then why do you suddently feel the need to decide what is or isn't an accepable level of proffesionalism for them?

It is their company, and they will be the deciders of what level of proffesionalsim they want to carry themselves with.

It is not for you to tell them how to carry themselves, much like you wouldn't tell a RR museum how to preserve their collection, or tell a Model Railroader how to build or run his layout.

He is guaranteed the privilege of stating his opinion (by the US Constitution) of the "joke" just as you are.  Organizations and companies can do what is legal, but that in no way makes them exempt or immune from criticism by the public, even if it is off the mark.

The jest is only funny if it is unbelievable (for example the infamous National Lampoon cover "Buy This Magazine Or We Shoot This Dog").

For those of us who remember the Dick Jensen fiasco(s) nothing is unbelievable when the topic is scrapping a great steam locomotive.  We've seen the impossible.

The post isn't a criticism of the 2100's owners but of the seemingly unproffesional attitude of Midwest Historical society where 2100 is to be restored.  These are two different groups MRPS owns the roundhouse where the work on 2100 will be done.  Making comments that an engine owned by another group which is coming to their facility will be scrapped (even in jest) is not acceptable.  https://www.facebook.com/MidwestRailwayPreservationSociety?fref=nf

Considering the aging railfan community, might this become more likely the reality in the future?

I'm not sure why you thought this deserved such a long and denigrating post.  What, exactly, about their attention to 2100 so far has you in a bunch?  (I was going to add 'if you need to complain about something, why not the 'usual suspects' in Wyoming' ... but that's probably just what would happen.)

In my opinion there's already far too much heat for the light on these forums recently, in too many respects; do we honestly need more consternation?

Give the guy a break. He's posted twice since 2010.

At least they could have shown it headed into the blast furnace under its own steam.

Of all the organiations that are 'trustable' to take good care of a steam locomotive, the 'new' 2100 group is right at the top with the 'two Kellys' (at Fort Wayne and Strasburg) and Scott Lindsey with 611.  It might not be in the 'best of taste' for them to joke about scrapping, but I am sure, and you should be too, that it's entirely a joke.

Midwest Railway Historical Society thought it would be funny to post on their Facebook page that a steam engine was to be scrapped instead of rebuilt. When questioned they defended the post saying they were just kidding. This is a group that should be professional thinks posting false, inflamatiory information is fun.  They should worry more about their own house in order. GT 4070 has been in their care for many years, the last 25 stripped down and unrebuilt. Remember these are the people American Steam choose to do the resteration of 2100.
