Going to NJT
Posted by Randy Stahl on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 4:32 PM
Wondering if anyone knows the easiest way to get from NY Laguardia to the NJT facility in Kearney NJ. I'm going for a day trip leaving Saturday from Bangor @ 5 am. Planning on arriving in NY at approx 10:00 am
Lots of good things happening in Maine, got the F-3 # 502 into the house, I hope to have traction motors for it soon, I'm looking forward to seeing it run!

Best bet? Rent a car. It will probably be a lot cheaper and faster than any other way to get to Kearney!

The F-3 is very much original, yes it has manual transition and it's really in cherry condition overall, even still has the original horns on it. It looks like about the only thing that got changed is the twin sealed beam headlights in the original casing.

Randy-

I used to run down there all the time. I think if you take the Jersey Turnpike and get off on to U.S. Routes 1 & 9 as though you were heading to Jersey City you'll drive right past Point No Point Bridge at Kearny. I've done it a lot in crew vans, but not much myself so make sure you get a decent map. Remember too, the neighborhood is none too good so be careful.

You can use public transportation. For a railfan, the most interesting way would be to hop a cab to the LIRR Woodside Station, the cab drivers generally know it because it is a convenient station for east of Jamiaca Long Islanders to hop a train without the cab fare all the way to Jamaica. Then ride the LIRR one stop into Penn Station, walk east a block and a half (long block) to 32nd St and 6th Avenue and hop a PATH Journal Square Train to Journal Square (Jersey City). A New Jersey transit bus, forget which number, will then take you directly to the Kearny NJT facility. Let us see, about 20 minutes in the taxi, ten minutes to wait for the LIRR train and ten minutes to Penn Station. Another ten minutes to make the transfer to PATH and ten minutes to assume you have just missed an outbound train. Then about 25 minutes to the Journal Square Station, and about another half hour including waiting time for the bus to Kearny, so we are talking about two hours. You might halve that in a rental car, but it also might take half again as long depending on traffic. There is lots of railroading to see from the LIRR as it passes Harold Tower and Sunnyside Yard.
