A New Railfan
Posted by halifaxcn on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 6:39 AM

To All,

I am proud to announce that my 3 y.o son Dominic went railfanning for the first time Sunday afternoon in Attleboro, MA. He caught 3 trains in about 45 mins. - 1 Amtrak ACELA eastbound to Boston, Amtrak Regional Service westbound, 1 MBTA Commuter rail.

Not a bad start!

Frank, [#welcome] to the forums. You and your little son come join us in the
Depot Diner and Coffee Shop any time. Joe and Matt are usually there,
as well as the rest of the gang. We even have folks from the UK and
Australia come by. Maybe your Dominic and Matt can teach ME about
the trains!

I think I've mentioned that I worked at The Great Train Store in Atlanta but one day I was showing this 4 1/2 year old boy the Athearn locomotives and he pointed to one painted in some RR's colors and told me that the real railroad didn't use that phase locomotive; the ones they had had a (I think) battery box where he was pointing. I was amazed, but I found out from my fellow workers that we gave his mother (drop dead gorgeous) old magazines and she read them to him. He was a walking encycopedia of railroad knowledge. He and the youngsters mentioned in previous posts are the future of railfanning and preservation. I think clubs need to do all they can to get these kids hooked.

My daughter was less than three when she corrected a well-meaning old lady who asked her if she could "see the choo-choo":

"That's not a choo-choo, it's a freight!"

She also knew at that age what a "scoot" was; could have taught the old lady a thing or two.

I'm looking forward to educating her daughter over the next several years!

Welcome, Frank and Dominic!

I agree. I wi***here were more railroad or should I say railfan clubs around. In my area Philadelphia, PA there are 0 that I know of. I too think it will be a good idea to get youngsters involved in trains. I used to have a Great Train Store in a mall not far from me approx:6 miles in Willow Grove, PA. But it closed down :( I was annoyed about that for the longest time. Oh well

Joe,

Sounds like my son Travis. He's constantly asking to go to the basement to see my model trains, to watch Thomas the Tank Engine, etc. Every time he hears a train, he stops and says, "Oh! Train!".

I got him into the cab of a CF7 on the Santa Cruz Big Trees and Pacific RR nearby here. His eyes were like saucers!

Cheers,
Michael
