Unique Amtrak sighting?
Posted by 88gta350 on Saturday, November 6, 2004 10:36 PM
On my way to work today (Saturday evening) I passed a west bound Amtrak train entering Middletown, PA on the Philly to Harrisburg line. It had about 4 normal Amtrak cars and I didn't think muchof it until I saw the final 3 cars. They were Maroon coaches lettered in gold JUNIATA. They appeared to be Pullman style cars but I'm not sure because I didn't get a great look. They were either newly rebuilt, brand new, or exceptionally well cared for as they looked great. Any one know why these were on this Amtrak train? Amtrak borrowing cars? Were they new cars just hitching a ride to their final home? I wish I could have gotten a picture.

Any guesses?

The cars were in PRR colors, right? Was the last one a heavyweight business car with a brass railed observation platform?
Bennett Levin, a wealthy Philadelphia buff, owns the business car Pennsylvania and other cars as well. My daily commute takes me right by the yards outside 30th Street station, and recently - this past week, I believe- -I saw an entire Pennsy train, with an E8 and about three cars. Last I heard, he didn't own the E - I think that belongs to the Blue Mountain and Reading, but that information is pretty old. At any rate, it is safe to say that what you saw was Bennett Levin's train, one way or another.
Which train was it on the rear of, do you know? One of the Pittsburgh trains?I don't know where the other cars have come from, but they look great, don't they?
On the last run of Amtrak's Broadway Limited in 1997(?), he had the Pennsylvania on the rear and I got to ride from 30th St. Station to Paoli.

That answers my question!! Those are the cars I saw then, they were passing through Middletown at about 5:10 Saturday evening. They are certainly beautiful cars, he takes good care of them.

Were these the same Pennsy cars that were owned by George Pins back in the 1970s? Haven't heard much about him in years. Had two Pennsy heavyweight cars that were in beautiful condition. Would take them out from time to time, coupled behind "Amcans". Cost a lot of money to keep those cars up.

heh. I just saw footage of the "Pennsylvania". Occasionally we will have a pair of coaches painted up for Norfolk Southern hitching a ride on the Capitol Limited. That is allways a nice sight.
