What goes on here? Is this a bargain basement liquidation by UP, or could this possibly be part of a bigger plan with January 1, 2015 in mind? (Tier 4 implementation)

Probably both, NS has been actively buying every relatively late model 6 axle EMD they can get their hands on lately.

We've had a discussion on the locomotive side of this forum.

Be forewarned, the thread has wandered a bit, but it should tell you what you want to know. It does get back on topic near the end. Apologize for the inactive link, the software seems to dislike .aspx endings.

I was just reading where NS purchased 100 of these units out of storage from UP, with the eventual strategy to rebuild them into effectively SD70Ace's.
