I have noticed an improvement in the new software, at least on my system, where the topics are now sorted in descending order by the time of the last post, such as "2 minutes ago" or "5 days ago."
The new type font seems to be too light, though -- not as bold as previously.
I've been out of touch (traveling) for a few days so the new look was a surprise. Haven't explored the new features yet but I like what I see so far.
Are forums not available in the mobile version or did I just miss the link when I came to trains.com on my Windows Phone?

Found the forum link. Win8 hides it and other links behind an icon that's new (to me) in the upper right corner of the home page.
But I'm replying to my own post because editing my previous seems impossible.
An "Edit" button appears to the left of the "Reply" and "Quick Reply" buttons on my system.

The "Edit" button is on the Win8 Phone screen, too. But when you tap it, it doesn't seem possible to move the existing text up far enough in the edit window to add anything to it.
I'm presently on my way to the Panama Canal in ms Zuiderdam so my online capabilities from my cell phone and this laptop aren't quite what they are when I'm at home. I'll certainly experiment more when I am back on dry land with a more reliable (cable modem) connection than the current satellite hookup.

I agree, and when Tree posts in green or Balt posts in blue, the white background overwhelms the text to the point where it is unreadable. Not that the thin black font being used now doesn't also disappear after a few minutes of reading. May I suggest that posters make their text Bold so it's easily read
