Same lead loco in a month, different locations
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 12:11 PM
How often have you seen a train lead by a loco only to see the same loco in the lead of another train in a totally different location and on a different subdivision?

Example:

BNSF SD70MAC 9935 at Morris, MN on Halloween waiting for a grain train.

Here it is again, still on a coal train, but now heading east at New York Mills, MN

Total luck I bet, but maybe locos stay in the same area for a while running back and forth on different trains, or again total luck.

I have seen that happen on many occasions. I was in Stevens Point, WI one Saturday afternoon and saw a WC SD45 arrive from the south(east). Sunday night that same SD45 came into Manitowoc from the north(west). Anotherwords, it went one direction, then changed and headed another. Loco's get around.

That's known as 'loco haunting'... It's when a loco decides it likes you, and starts following you everywhere. Be careful, they don't deal well with rejection. :-)

CSX runs a V500 unit coal train from PSI Power plant in Cayuga, IN on the CE&D Sub to the Vermillion Grove Black beauty mine on the Danville Secondary. The same pair of locomotives stay with the train until they need to be serviced and then another pair is brought in.

That has happened to me a lot, for instance, I saw NS 9688 on an intermodal in late July, I saw it again a month ago on the 38G.

Yeah, that happens to me a lot. I usually see the same CSX GP40-2's at Palmer, MA and Cedar Hill Yard. Of course they mainly work the locals there so they don't travel too far.
