Major carriers have proposed to the UTU to eliminate separate train and engine employees and instead call them a transportation employee.

This isn't anything new. UTU has proposed this many times. I'm not sure why a major carrier would care.

figers...UTU and the carriers tring to sell out the BLET... such a shame when the union and the comany are sharing the same bed... only ones that will lose are US crews...engineer and conductor alike....but mosty the engineer....if this goes down... and thier is no "engineer" craft anymore... leads me to believe that makes my contract worthless.... moreso then it already is in some ways....and forces me to join the UTU to have the same crappy contracts they get ramed up my ***...like the conductors keep getting contract after contract!!!!!! UTU+carrier=the workers are F......ed.......royaly!!!!!!!!!

CSXengineer: It all depends on how it is implemented. It could benefit you and other employees greatly if implemented with all consideration for the rights and seniority of those already on the job. For example, it might apply to new employees only. It might give you better job scheduling, better choices, and a more regular life. It could of course do exactly the opposite, but isn't that what Unions or for? To prevent it from making matters worse?

I looked at the Section 6 notices on both sides of the fence, and saw a lot of things in both that I think "ain't gonna happen."

But a sixth week of vacation for us older heads would certainly be nice!

How about that Item 4 that the UTU is proposing!!! Shift and weekend differentials, meaning extra pay for work between 6pm to 6am and weekend pay from 1201AM Friday to 1159pm Sunday. It would be nice, BUT IT'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.
I see that request by the National Carrier's Conference to consolidate train and engine crews as the first step to a common extraboard. No more freight pools or regular assigned jobs. Everyone will simply work off one giant extraboard.
And I'm also very suspicious of the Carrier's "Manpower Utilization and Productivity Improvement." The changes they propose are:

1. If an employee does not meet the railroad's attendance standard for full time employment, a proportional reduction shall be made in the railroad's contributions towardt that employee's benefits based on his/her availability. An employee who is available less than fifty (50) percent of the time will not be eligible for benefits.
2. Any existing rules relating to attendance or absences from service such as leaves of absence, guarantee, lay off, vacation scheduling, temporary vacancies, exercise of seniority, displacement, assignment, extra board regulation, and pool regulation, will be amended or eliminated so as to facilitate full-time employment.

NO WAY!!! Not only do the carriers want to yank benefits and pay away, but now they want to try to prorate it based on availability??? So, if I'm available 80% of the time the carrier wants 20% of my pay???

they already do pay you on a what you work bases...think about it...if your on a pool job... you work..you get payed...you dont work..by marking off...vacation..personal day... or your trun didnt get out..you dont get payed...now the extra board...you get payed for 6 day avaliabilty... you mark off a day...you lose 2 days pay...the penalty for marking off... when you might get payed for 6 days of being on call..and actualy only work 3 or 4..not a bad trade if you stay marked up... and as far as yard jobs..same thing..you work..you get payed..you mark off..you dont get payed.... so actualy... the pay isnt the issue..its an availaity on the benifits im guessing

that is what the basic idea behind a union is...to make things better for the men...but when your union officals (the people hirer up then the local level)...are doing exactly what the carriers want to do... it isnt better for the men...
