Amtrak private car special
Posted by MP173 on Friday, September 26, 2014 5:21 PM

I went to the office this afternoon (Porter, In...right adjacent to NS mainline).  There are benefits to this job which go beyond the normal.

NS mainline seems to be a mess, but that is not the purpose of this thread.

As I left at 330pm, Amtrak 49 was heading into Chicago.  It was due in at 917am.

Behind that was Amtrak engine 97 and 151 with private cars.  It recrewed at CP482 and headed west with 16 private cars:

Northern Sky Charter - Northern Dream

Northern Sky Charter - Domeliner- Northern Sky Dome

Frisco - Cimarron River

Iowa Pacific - SLRG -1 - Caratas

Pullman - Pacific Sunset

Boston & Maine - Salisbury Beach

Pullman - Pacific Sands

unmarked - Tioga Pass

Santa Fe - Vista Canyon

Pullman - Federal

L&N - Olive Hazard Pay

Northern Pacific - Domeliner - The Observatory

The Chessie - Domeliner - Moonlight Dome

SP - Burch Grove

unmarked - Domeliner Puget Sound

unmarked - Domeliner Sierra Hotel (with rear platform)

16 cars of which 5 were Domeliners to take in the breathtaking Northern Indiana Industrial Complex.  What a great way to travel in 2014.  What a great way to cap off a work week for me.

Anyone know what this train was all about?

The train was the return leg of the AAPRCO Pine Tree Limited returning from the group's convention in Portland, Maine.  Eastbound the train consisted of 26 cars and 3 locomotives.  10 cars were separated in Boston to be attached to trains at South Station.

If this train was not 3 to 6 hours late from the time they had been promised, I want to know why.

It seems everybody else on these rails is late (by far).

Maybe because Amtrak is being paid a pretty penny to run this train and is actually turning a profit.
