General Electric advertisement
Posted by dknelson on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 7:57 AM
"The Advertiser" is the magazine of the ANA: Association of National Advertisers. I get it as part of my work.
In the October 2004 issue page 131 is a full page ad from GE featuring their new EPA compliant "Evolution Series" diesel locomotive, No. 2011, in nice GE paint.
The headline is "Run this for 18 months" over a photo of the locomotive
then down below is a photo of a tank car and the headline continues
"Save this much fuel."
Among other things the ad copy says "to learn more, visit getransportation.com

What is odd about the ad is the photo of the tank car, which is lettered HOKX 111721.
It is a standard modern dark gray tank car with a black band in the center but it looks like someone at GE decided to "photoshop" in an underframe taken from a photo of a dark red/brown flat car, complete with stake pockets! If there is such a car that looks like this, I sure have not seen it on any trains. And it is not that the flat car was behind the tank car on the next track because the back wheels of the tank car are behind the flat car frame. This looks like the modern equivalent of tank cars mounted on flat cars from, oh, the 1890 era.

Like the slogan says at the bottom of the ad: GE: imagination at work."

They're probably lucky somebody in advertising didn't try to run a picture of, say, a Challenger, because it would be "more exciting..."

The ad was also in the USA Today newspaper a few weeks ago, money section.I thought it was good for a laugh to see a tank car on an old flat car.
