Cabrides

On regular class 1's, I keep seeing people who have had cabrides. How do you do it? I've always wanted a cab ride but I just cant get one.

Do you mean that you have seen more than two people in the cab, or have you talked to and they said they have had cabrides? If it is the former, I would guess that they were training a new conductor or engineer.

Cabrides are against the rules on ALL Class 1's (both moving, and stopped), so chances are low of getting one.

In a club I was at, one of the members is a CN engineer and sometimes takes his son with him as longs as it doesn't interfere with school or he doesn't have to get up a 3:00am.

In most cases... If they do it, it's against the rules. So the crew is risking getting in trouble for it. But sometimes they will still do it spur of the moment if they see somebody standing there, and the situation is right. Or they pre plan it with a friend. But it is very rare, since most guys don't want to risk it.

Yes, it's a big deal and against the rules for a good reason.

Person hops off the cab, then as they are getting off they trip on the ladder, fall down, hurt themselves, and sue for everything the railway is worth.

Sometimes you have a better chance with a smaller railway, or a passenger railway.

Actually CP rail has no such Rule...

I have been invited to come into the cab a few times. The only time I got to ride in a cab was on a shortline (and only for a few switch moves).

Nice idea. But, the problem with my sister is she would probably get us on the train and then get us thrown off while moving at high speed.

i got a cabride on BNSF once[:I] but the engineer only let me in because he had half an hour to wait for another train

I have gotten two cabrides over the road from Neenah to Manitowoc, WI and back on Wisconsin Central back in the day. I also have gotten to ride around the yard in Manitowoc as well and been invited to come up in many cabs...cant count them all. The reason for me being able to do all this is im only 18! I look young and looked younger when most of it happened. I just sat where the train was a stared at it and stared at it and did this for upwards of any hour depending on the situation. Eventually they would wave me over and invite me up in the cab. This happened at Illinois Railway Museum as well. They were switching a METRA F-Unit around and I sat there and watched and they engineer asked if I wanted to have a quick ride. It turned out to be over an hour! I haven't had a cabride since before 2001 and have been in limited cabs (while operating) since. I only wi***here were waivers and such to sign so you could get a cabride. They used to have them back in the day...from what I heard on WC...but I never signed one and niether did my dad.

Back in the day it was easier to get in the cab. I was invited up into several Swithcher cabs on the old B&M switching around the yard. And got to ride with an engineer I knew on the COTTON BELT several times on a local train. It is an incredible thing to do for a railfan if you get the chance.

That is correct,though I have had quite a few from the Class 1's out in S. Cal., and a ride on the WC,up in Wausau,Wi. I have had rides on the Santa Fe, SP, and WHEN they were nice,the UP.I had signed a waiver,and got to see the entire L.A. yard of the UP.I even have a few pix of my adventure.

Most of my cabrides have been on switching moves.I used to work at a warehouse that was switched by the Santa Fe, and I got some cabrides[:)].
