Is that a "field grade" adverb?
You are forgetting or ignoring that cops don't do anything on their own. They are directed by laws first and their command - just like service personnel. So if the organization doesn't want to or can't afford more personnel, it won't happen. This goes directly to the governing body of the location. They weigh in on the budgets through taxes.
Maybe they do want to respond, but can't due to not enough personnel to cover the more important crimes, or because the particular railroad has its own police and will call if they need help - so many factors come into this scenerio that none of us know.
You can't classify an idiot, since I seriously doubt you have that kind of education. Can you spell irresponsible or self-absorbed? These would be better terms. The term idiots reflects on you more than anyone in that category.
Bad parenting is a whole other book!
Ulrich The railroad didn't just ignore the incident. Apparently, the crew gave the wedding party a good dressing down...and that should have been the end of it. Notice the absence of any police response to this story...

The point of taking this further is just that, to make a point. Next time might not be so lucky.
There seems to be a small epidemic with professional photographers thinking that standing on active train tracks makes for an ideal location to have people pose for photographs. This is one of the dumbest ones I've read about yet.
Hopefully they're prosecuted and it gets some press so that it has a chance to deter some of this nonsense.
Mookie I am probably going to wish The Driver had held both of my hands for all of Wednesday, but here goes: Kyle - people are not idiots. I hate that term. People are humans. Some just don't use good judgement. In fact, I think all of us are guilty of that. 2nd, while a few of us feel very strongly about people who tresspass, especially on our beloved subject, there really isn't much any of us can do about it. Well, there is, but it isn't legal and I am not going to offer it as a solution. No point in getting exercised over things we have no control. 3rd, I frankly don't care if you and 12 other posters are lunch buddies. What difference does it make, except someone is clever enough to get on here multiple times to post multiple threads and possibly dilute some decent posts that they may have made. Again, nothing we can do about that. 4th - you never know when I am on here - except when I post. Same with a big percentage of posters. Figure that one out. 5th - well, I am not going there because I don't want to make this a 15 page rant about this. So take a chill pill, express your opinions that show some thought and not comic book solutions. Who knows, you may actually come up with something someone reading this forum can use or.....enjoy.

I did! The solution is get more cops like the FEC ones that arrested a tresspasser. If cops actually cared enough to respond to these incidences, there would be less tresspassing, and less tresspasser deaths so the cops wouldn't have to investigate and clean up what remains of the body.
Also, people aren't idiots. Only the idiotic people would do stupid stuff that can majorly harm others are idiots. Idiots have no brain cells left. Yes some people don't use good judgement, but there is an acceptable level of bad judgement, one that has a small chance of causing major injures to others. Almost all young children are aan exception, but if they do really stupid stuff (like run out into the street, play on RR tracks, I would say that is the result of bad parenting.

Well put, all the way around, Mookie. I appreciate the quoted tip as well.
send the FEC police
Mookie You two have a good time figuring out the solar panels for these "mats". Maybe we should consider shock collars for each individual. Keep them off private property... I need my beauty sleep..... Nite. Moo....

I did mention the mats, but then said that for the price, the RRs might as well just have cops to arrest tresspassers, and maybe have their lawyer push to convict tresspassers to the fullest extent of the law. You feed a few stories of the tresspassers being arrested and having to pay fines to the media, and your smarter idiots will stay off the tracks. You can't convince all the idiots to stay off the tracks, some will only learn when they are hit. But the majority who have a small amount of brain cells will stay off. Plus the mats would be a hassle.
edblysard Yes, what a coincidence. Of course, there is a poster who said he had lots and lots of other names he uses….

I am going to assume you mean me. There were people who accused me of having multipule accounts, but for the record I only have one, this one. I have never ever have another one.
Mookie Euclid Maybe Kyle could chime in on what to do about weddings on trestles. Interesting. You invoke the name of Kyle and here he is. Almost magic-like, wouldn't you say?

I was seeing what was new, in addition to posting a new topic about Fred's Blog post about why the Chinese government should invest in US RR (I think his post is "foolishness disquised as journalism"). I saw this topic and then saw my name (I didn't know I had fans of my post). So of course I decided to post.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who is on the site. It says who's on the forums in the side bar. Euclid most have seen my name. Pure and simple as that.
Euclid Yes, opinions and some no-nonsense, hard hitting solutions to the problem. I would have expected the water cannon to be introduced.

Water cannons would cause people to fall off the bridge and die, which would get the RR in a lot of trouble. However since you brought it up, you got me thinking. There are mats that you can put down on counter tops that give a small electrical to any living thing that walks on it. The product is designed to keep cats of the counter top. Now if you were to place some on a few bridges and switch location about every month, people wouldn't walk on the bridges. Cats don't like it, and tresspassers hate it to.
However it would just be a lot easier and cheaper to have cops arrest those who tresspass, and then have the RR prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. And then put a news story on TV talking about a large crackdown on tresspassers and how they are getting arrested.
How nice that you live in the same neighborhood. I was just sure it was sleight-of-hand. And yes, he would have probably pages of opinions on trestle people.
Yes I saw Kyle in the neighborhood, and figured he would have some solid opinions on how to handle people on a trestle.

Ulrich Somehow I doubt they'l be doing this again any time soon..getting caught on a high trestle with a train approaching with nowhere to go would be alot more frightening than a fine and lecture from a policeman.

I agree with Murphy, all of these options combined would be the best. Maybe try to throw them in jail, I am sure you could find a charge. Maybe Reckless endangerment because emergency brake applications can derail the train, and kill the crew and bystanders.
ChuckCobleigh Ulrich ... However, trespassing on a trestle is really dangerous only to the trespasser. ... At least until the engineer big-holes the air and possibly experiences a derailment. Or an emergency responder is put into a risky situation (like any Code-3 run, for instance). Just sayin'.

Yes and no. If the engineer is pretty certain an emergency braking situation would cause a serious derailment, he probably wouldn't apply the emergency brakes. He will almost always choose to save himself, equipment and others that would be killed, injured or damaged in a derailment. If the engineer panics and applies the emergency brakes, yes that could get really messy. It would be better if cops arrested tresspassers before they get hit, and teach them a lesson before so they would tresspass again.
But if the engineer understands the risk and doesn't big hole it then once again only the trespasser dies. If I'm driving on an icy road and I see a trespasser in my path, do I swerve and risk losing control and killing my family or do I run over the trespasser? Sorry... don't mean to sound callous... but I'm going to look out for my family.
Sure... but in a world of limited resources we often have to go with good enough.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
I disagree. A run in with the police might have the lasting effect of having the people involved understand that what they did was illegal and dangerous. Perhaps it would have sunk in, and prevented them from doing other, similar, stupid things in the future. At the very least, it could prevent the photographer from suggesting going out on that bridge for pictures in the future.
Phoebe Vet Ulrich Mookie Ulrich Comparing apples to oranges. explanation, please Meant in response to comment on drunk drivers... Not everything requires a police response and court action. Drunk driving obviously does... trespassing not so much. Not apples to oranges at all. Both are illegal with the possibility of death and/or serious injury. If that had been a freight train instead of a tourist train, people would be dead. Being out on that bridge was every bit as dangerous as driving drunk.

I agree, both activities are dumb, dangerous, and illegal. However, trespassing on a trestle is really dangerous only to the trespasser. The trespasser presents no danger to you or me or to the general public. Thus, a drunk driver should be treated more severely than a trespasser, although both are breaking the law.
What if the police had been called in this particular instance? What would the outcome have been? More than likely the trespassers would have been fined, but nothing more to improve safety or deterrence would have been achieved. In the case of a drunk driver, the driver would have been arrested and convicted, and his/her driving privileges would have been curtailed, thereby improving road safety to at least that limited extent.
These trespassers did a really stupid thing by going out onto that bridge, no two ways about it. But sometimes normal people do stupid things. More than likely they got caught up in the moment and now regret their transgression. They probably had time to reflect on it now, and unless they're hardcore stupid they must realize that what they did was really dumb. I doubt very much that they're celebrating a memorable moment or laughing over it. I know that my wife would be furious with me... I'd probably be spending my honeymoon in the doghouse and then some. A fine or a criminal conviction would have added nothing to make the situation better.
The sad thing is that if one of the idiots got hit, they would sue the RR. I think that these people should be prosecuted, and then put on TV so we can make an example out of them. That would surely stop some of the smarter idiots from trespassing. I would be willing to bet one of the attendees will try this stunt at there wedding party because now they think no harm was done. To bad they did get a pic of the limo's licenses plate.
