Wish all vets out there a good day and any at a dangerious location, in that service, to be safe. Would like support for vets. from our public...They keep our country and us safe.

Thought I'd take advantage of one of several restaurant chains' hospitality to veterans - they've offered various levels of "free" to vets and active duty personnel.

One disadvantage of living in a town near a major military base is that the restaurants have a ready supply of customers who qualify.  Since all of the involved eateries had lines out the door, I came home and ate lunch here...

Thanks to all who served, and all who serve today.  And hats off in silent salute to those who didn't come home.

------------------

Nice day today - better get busy and enjoy it - the cold is on the way.

A little excitement over in Carl's neck of the woods, where a bakery vehicle maintenance facility in Berwyn was destroyed by an explosion and fire Tuesday.

Apparently the mechanics were changing out the propane tank in a truck and what they thought was empty was full...

There were four injuries, mostly burns, which is lucky as the roof collapsed almost immediately.

Much cooler here today - temps in the 40's vs almost +60F yesterday.  I did get a little outdoor painting done - mostly some trim that needed attention.

Thermometeter stuck at one degree (F); Hasn't been out of single digits in 24 hours. I'd kick it, but toes are already going numb.

(ditto the comments on 50 degrees for paint. Ma Nature giving me a break on exterior paint for 10 days... got tired out on "bavarian creme" ( aka dirty non-descript funky tan)...below 50 degrees, the pigment separates and the paint runs and will stay tacky for days.

I actually use +60F as my guide for painting.  This was some minor trim and some touch-up.  Should have gotten more done this past summer, but didn't.

No recent word on the battle with the trail folks.  While the sledders have been vocal, they're a lesser issue - they already get to use the corridor when there's snow on the ground (and enough to cover the rails).   Pulling the rails would simply extend their season by a week or two on either end.

The issue is with a few rich folks who are funding the "trail" campaign, and who may actually just want everyone (even the sledders) out of the forest.

Comments are open until December 15.  Then they'll have to take time to consider the outcome of the hearings, as well as the comments.  We're not expecting anything until after the end of the year (probably after the governor is inaugurated again).

And there are those who think the decision has actually already been made, that they are just waiting some amount of time (and the official requirements) before letting it out.

We were hovering right around freezing today (mid-afternoon and it's 27 out there).  I did my errands on my bike today, and had my sanity questioned on more occasions than one.

While I was trackside, I encountered three westbound freights--two intermodal and one manifest.  This would have been in the space of about 15 minutes.  An eastbound scoot was due within minutes of the time I turned away from the tracks.

At a little after six this evening, the temperature is hovering around 0 Celsius, and we expect snow tomorrow--up to about 4 inches on the benches. Winter is almost here.

I do have to go out tomorrow morning--to get my driver's license renewed (the last time, I renewed it by mail, and I expect to do the same the next time).

Sigh

NorthWest

We went from about 50 degrees to about 38 degrees (with lows in the low 20s) in two days. Dead

Thursday Morning:

Temp at about 19 deg, windchill at 1deg.  wind is about 10 mph.  The weather dudes/dudettes seem to think  this is gonna hang around for another 10 or so days.  I guess it IS Winter.. but a couple of days ago it was sunny and in the high 70's...  Little excitement yesterday afternoon-- Earthquake !  4.8, epicenter was about 13 miles due west of here ( South of Conway Springs,Ks.) rattled the dishes, the house shook, and the pictures on the walls shifted.. No visible damages.. Not much more than mentions on the news aroun d here....UPRR (OKT sub) was pretty close to the center, and the BNSF was pretty quite most of the day, THe K&O is in the Conway Springs area, and it would probably take a lot more to effect their movements and tracks (?) Sigh

Looks like some chain saw time today.Coffee Everyone stay warm and safe..

Today AM: 28 degrees, 10 degree windchill.

Winter came suddenly! I hope the storm goes away, and we get rain and warmth back.

We are under a lake effect snow advisory today.  If it does form, it'll probably miss me.  Nonetheless, the snowblower is out of the garage and into it's usual shelter (the lawnmower goes there in summer - it's stowed in the back of the garage now), and I'm stocking up on gas for it this morning.

In case you were wondering - getting the snowblower out of the garage with the truck there would be difficult at best.  So it stays in a small shelter.

Just noticed that some goldfinches are showing up at the bird feeders.  Must be veterans - there's no seed in the feeders yet this year...

Fill the feeder with thistle seed and you'll have every Goldfinch in the county in your yard. Big Smile

Black oil sunflower seeds seem to be almost as effective...

My Yankee feeder holds every bit of a gallon container worth of seeds - and between the finches and the sparrows, they can drain that in a day.  The outer feeder holds upwards of three gallons of seed, and the platform feeder near the window (next to the Yankee feeder) will also hold about three gallons worth.  Daily refills of all three are not out of the question.

I keep one or two suet feeders stocked as well, but they tend to last somewhat longer.

I buy my seed in 40 pound bags at the farm store and have a 30 gallon trash can (steel - darned squirrels...) to store it in.

The ex started this foolishness, but I do enjoy watching the birds.  My daughter spotted something over 23 varieties when she was living at home.  A couple of bird books hold a spot on a shelf near the window.

Started this morning in double digits (the wrong way at -13) and expect a heat wave to +15 as we slowly climb out of the hole we got vortexed into. The inch or so of powder is about to get added to. The weather guessers really blew it this time on the severity of the temperature drop. I'm sure Willy2 is out there grinning. Going to and from work at odd hours to avoid the people with baloneyskin tires on the local streets here. Saw a fender bender yesterday where a car lost traction on a downhill road, bumped a car stopped in front of it (setting it in motion) and then broadside the same car about 200 fet further down the hill. All in slow motion.

BossHen has the finches pecking on the window next to her desk when seed gets low. Looking for a better place to hang the conventional bird feeder (Milo/millet/corn/sunflower seed) now that the three cats next door and the squirrels all have an interest in the feeder)...The dog has no interest in the birds, but the critters stalking the birds and bird seed set him off.

Tree:  need to give our birds your address... Maybe we need to drive them out there and then raid your fridge!  Sounds like you are an excellent host!

Sir Chicken - heard you had to call out the dozers again this year to get rid of the tumbleweeds.  Did Wyoming have the same problem again?  If they made it this far, someone here would figure out a way to make them gourmet appetizers!  Ick!

When we lived in Maryland, we used to have a squirrel that used to come right up to our deck door and wait until my wife tosed out a piece of bread for him.  That was his "special" treat.

He was very well behaved.

There was no early snow to pack down the tumbleweeds and they had an excellent growing season. The darned things are out on maneuvers now, piling up against every fenceline and in every ditch. The further south and east you go here, the worse it seems to be. I think they are people's pets up north in Wyoming.

We've had some flaky white stuff in the air today, but nothing that's stuck yet.  I expect that some will stay overnight, though.

Had to get a physical...a "welcome to Medicare" thing they put you through.  New to me:  questions to show whether I'm at risk for falling (I'm not), or for depression (I am).  I had a nurse tell me this morning I wouldn't need blood tests (which permitted me to eat before I went there), only to find that the doctor wanted them.  So starve tonight (shouldn't be too hard if I'm asleep), labs tomorrow.

I don't know why...I've had plenty of physicals before...but the thought went through my head before this one that I should be wearing clean underwear!  Not that I don't, and not that this was different from any other physical I've had recently.

Tumbleweeds may blow away from Colorado now that they've become the second-most-prominent "weed" in the state.  I'm not sure I'd consider them a delicacy, or even desirable, as I have it on good authority that I've already flipped.  And nobody needs roughage that badly!

The temperature was about freezing this morning, and we had a little snow here--but in Ogden there was much more, and people had their ditchfinders and carfinders on.

I forwarded MC's comment about the anxious birds letting the Boss Hen know she needed to put more feed out for them to Katie--and it reminded her that she needs to buy more seed. A few minutes ago, she told me that she had heard that if you do not already have goldfinches depending on you you will have to put nothing but thistleseed out, else they will ignore you--she would like to have goldfinches stopping by--but she feels obligated to keep feeding the birds that already depend upon what she already puts out--black oil sunflower seeds, and thistleseed is quite expensive.

I went to the fairpark this morning to get my driver license renewed; I had the application already completed (online), and needed only a vision exam--I passed it. I now have a paper six month temporary license, and expect to get a card in a few weeks. I expect to have to have my eyes checked again in five years just before the new license expires (I had to have them checked five years ago). One year, I did not get to the renewal until after my birthday, and had to take a written test.

I just concluded a research project in which I discovered that the original Southern Railway "Big John" covered hopper cars are all but extinct.  They were built in 1962 (so they're older than the 40-year age limit for interchange), and had round roof hatches.

There were also "Big John"s built in 1965, with trough hatches and more height, hence more volume.  Get 'em while they last!

Congratulations, Johnny, on not hanging up the keys just yet!  Have a safe five years on the road!

Just renewed my CDL as well, everything was good. Carrying around a sheet of paper in my wallet is interesting, I still have the voided out one with until the mail brings the new card, just in case. Thinking about working on getting my endorsements, though, keeping my options open.........
