I have considered a career in rail.

I do very much appreciate CSXEngineers info in that as a railfan, real railroading can be a shocker to the faint hearted. I'm interested in the locomotive/rail car repair as my backgroud covers collision repair, welding, and paint refinishing.

I too have considered a job in railroading. I already made it through UP's conductor's interview but did not get the job...I guess it was pretty stupid of me cause I was still in school. Now I am out and free as a bird...well kinda. I will re-apply again...where I dont know but the day will come.

Norfolk Southern needs a lot of people also, their website lets the various hiring sessions around the system, unlike CSX you do not have to pay some community college 5 grand for conductor training, and still not be guaranteed a job, Norfolk Southern has their own school. Just thought I would mention this in case someone is looking for a Railroad career.

You should definately look into a career as a carman, they need those guys just as much as running trades employees....and since you have a background in collision repair, welding, and paint refinishing, you really are an ideal candidate.

I know BNSF has been advertising a lot of those position lately.

I know here in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Southern is hiring after the 1st of the year looking to put on 10 full-time employees and 40 part-timers. Reason being might be the Plymouth Sub and the possible reinstatement of the Plymouth to Sheboygan line.

Also, Progressive Rail is starting Wisconsin & Northern Railway on some of CN's abondoned lines in nothern Wisconsin.

I have also considered going to school for diesel mechanic for a larger Class 1. I think they need a few people for that...at least UP does. Also making sure you're not at a place that might be shut down and worked moved elsewhere like up here on the CN in Wisconsin.

Thank you MacGuy. I thought though that the shop forces had specific descriptive titles like welder, fabricator, or sheetmetal repairer.
