Sometimes the slobber gets so deep a feller has to wear hip waders. Just an observation.

I can understand the self-seeking and flatterer, but to whom are you directing the "servile component" of sycophant?

Maybe I don't understand because you are so much smatter than I, Dave. (said with a wink)

Guys, don't read too much into this. It is just my opinion that sometimes the tendency to heap praise on certain individual(s) ad nauseum can have the effect of suppressing free expression of ideas, especially when the erstwhile disciples of said individual tend to become abusive and insulting to those who dare take a disparate course of discussion.

Gabe, I would not feign an IQ contest with you or most others on this forum. The point of this topic is focussed on aquiesence, not intelligence. Your point is well taken, though.

As a foreigner here, I've always just assumed that all of this was just examples of mysterious local customs in the USA. Whenever I visit I find that it takes me three or four days to adjust to all the things that are done differently, like driving on the opposite side of the road. In Australia we do things a lot differently, and sometimes more quietly. So much so that there is a suggestion of a national "cultural cringe", particularly towards Europe. But even the birthday wishes and counting of forum stars seems strange to me!

Funny,
No one got POed when I got two or three pages of
"Atta boys" when I got five stars.

Cant remember a single negative word when Mookie made it.

Same for Jim(planestrains) and Kevinstherrman....

And many others, so...

I wonder why someone felt the need to wizz in the punch bowl this time.

Sour grapes, or just jealous?

Praise is most often earned by those who have made a positive contribution to the proceedings. Scorn is reserved for those who insult the readers' intelligence. An honest question or post will get an honest answer (spend a little time in the "Stupid Question" thread). A self-serving, leading question or comment will incur the wrath of the participants (Look up "Do You Support Rule G?"). There's a problem with that?

David,
Have you always been so insecure that you have to ask such self serving questions?
If so, do everyone, yourself included, a favor.
Go off in the corner, and have a conversation with yourself....
At least that way, you know you can win what ever argument you start.....

As usual, most of you overreact. Most of you missed the gist of the post: Sycophancy can inhibit the free exchange of ideas. That's all. Nothing was said of being "PO'ed" about anything. The fact that most of you can only throw insults into the exchange as a result of this sycophant reference bears itself as a prime example.

And the best part is that sycopahncy is curable. For just pennies a day you can help sponsor a sycophant child in one of the many countries we help. That's less than a subscription to a railroad magazine.

I'm Sally Struthers, and I thank you.

No, I didn't miss the gist of your first post, not at all...
You were making reference to everyone falling over themselves offering congratulations to Mark Hemphill on his last star.

And, as usual, once your sarcastic comment was thrown back at you, you decided that there was a totally different meaning to what you wrote in the first place.
Typical of my 17 year old daughter, and, so it seems, you too.

Jealousy is a very ugly suit, but it appears your tailor has had lots of practice....

A review of most of your writings show that you often make ambiguous posts and comments, which allows you to jump from one side to another in any debate.

Sad that you are so unable to make up your mind.

Must be rough going through life so...blown around by the winds of uncertainty, all alone with yourself.

Then again, it appears your are you own best freind, so your not that alone, after all!

Could it be that what Futuremodal is trying to say is that sometimes in our zeal we forget moderation?

I believe it is important to sometimes clean the cobwebs out and reset the zero on the dial, it does yourself good and the poeple around you too.

In real life, I can be a very private person at times and this is often misconstrued as indifference, self centeredness, or many other things, but generally I am a pretty humble one.

Maybe FM is talking about foaming in general.

Ed...is a "sycophant" better than a "Flip-Flopper?" Or, is that just ambiguous? I'm sending my pennies to Sally! Or, is that being a "Sycophant?" Can I just be a confederate when I agree and, an antagonist when I don't? [8]
