I was looking around the net to see if I could catch a story that would explain the detour. Nada.
Nothing on the Amtrak site other than the train is (was)? five hours late. My guess? Some freight cars fell off the BNSF tracks somewhere between KCMO and Galesburg.

Is that St. Louis' "Union Station" or their main station? If it is, I figured it would have been a little larger.

....St. Louis station of 40 or so years ago had a huge train shed....and a large Head House at the end of it. I believe the large shed is a retail location now...Someone with more up to date info will tell us....

Look just over the top of the last two passenger cars and you will see a low building and you may spot the headless arrow on the wall toward the back of the building. That, my friends, is the oldest Amshack on the system. The old St Louis Union Station would be seen with a pan left about 90 degrees or so. The head house and roof over the track/platform area still exist, with extensive renovations, a hotel, shops and many "brand name" restaurants surronding a large water pond and open public area. It is kind of neat.

I think St Louis is kicking around a rail passenger terminal near the site of the Amshack, but that means the expenditure of taxpayers' money, and as you know, any politician that advocates spending tax money is likely to get voted out of office. Meanwhile, the Amshack is warm, dry and only a few steps from the passenger tracks. Try to find an airport where the distance from the auto drop point to the boarding point is less than 100 feet.

We have been informed that this is the Southwest Chief, being detoured due to a derailment on BNSF at Fort Madison, Iowa.

The Chief was my guess. too far south to be a Zephyr or Builder. Once a long time ago 84 or 85 I think, the Chief was routed that way to accomodate the Newton, Il High School Band going to the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. FYI that day the Ann Rutledge equipment ran the Chicago-Galesburg-Ft. Madsion-KCMO route. I assume a similar move was made for the return trip.
