A co-worker of mine, who was a former EMT and who had to respond to a number of suicides once said the following:

"If you have anyone in this world who cares about you, ANYONE at all, you have NO RIGHT to kill yourself!"

Cliff was a rough around the edges guy, but you could see he really felt deeply about this.

Sad, and not what I would call rational.  Perhaps not irrational either, but...as you say, Larry, sad for all involved now.  The son must be devastated, and the train crew will be very unhappy that they were not given an opportunity to give, or to withhold, their consent, even if in principle.
