Okay, here's a thought. Enter into an agreement with Walmart to develop a rail oriented transportation service people want to buy using Walmart's many strengths.

Mr. Daivd Gunn lower prices on metroliner serivce from Philly to New York and vise versa. This way Amtrak can compete with SEPTA and NJT's service to New York which happens to be way cheaper than the Amtrak serivce. Amtrak metroliner $96 roundtrip. Amtrak Acela $188 round trip. SEPTA and NJT total $40 roundtrip. I would lower the metroliner price to mabe $60. This way people only have to pay 36 extra for a trip that is 90 mins in duration and has portable access to bathrooms. This is mush better than waiting 3hrs. to get to NY using SEPTA and NJT. This way Amtrak can draw in more customers and more revinew.

Use sleepers where people have their own bathroom and shower per room. VIA has this feature in their sleepers but the viewliners don't seem to.

Have a live person answer the phone when you call. The electronic menu router may be cheaper, but it sure doesn't say "welcome" to customers.

This is interesting. I was about 6 months ago listing to a press conference that David Gunn had with CNBC. Anyway . . .a lady called and asked David about the automated phone service, JULIE. He said that there is no way to have live people all of the calls Amtrak gets regarding fares, and trip planing. It would cost too much becuase they would have to hire people to do this. This is what Mr. Gunn said. I would personaly like it much better if people did pick up the phone instead of JULIE but. . .sighs .. . oh well.
