Hi Jeffhergert,
Whether submitting or judging anything, anytime, anywhere always remember KISS (keep it simple stupid) is the order of the day. It prevails every time. If it's subtle yet "right on"  there are no popular rules by which to judge it .... so it gets passed-by.

This is not to imply that the winning photo on the Maine  narrow gauge was unworthy. And Yes, That does look like a flask in the brakeman's hip pocket  -- The Human Element for sure.

zardoz

With the theme being what it is, I was expecting all sorts of dramatic and fascinating photos showcasing what railroaders have to deal with, both good and bad, on a daily basis. Instead......

But I did vote for Ken's pocket watch photo. I liked the simplicity of the image. I also liked how the image left itself open to many interpretations that each person could relate to from their own experiences.

Around the railroad when you hear the term "human element," it usually isn't associated with something good.  I was expecting to see pictures of run through switches, wheels on the ground or cars laying every which way.Smile, Wink & Grin

I missed the voting but also liked the pocket watch photo.  I just hope that item in his pocket isn't what I think it is.

A toss up between Berry and Fitzgerald…both show the theme, but the human factor shows best with Michael Berry’s shot, so I went with his.

That said, Fitzgerald’s photo evokes more “emotional” response, it is recognizable and familiar to any railroader.

I have looked at them several times over the past few days, and have eventually concluded there is no particular shot that stands out from the others.  All good shots, but....

Ok...catching up with things...Here in the Forum under General Discussion is where it should  be....got it.  Saw last week's results and was able to see and vote on this week's.  There were none out of the ordinary or very dramatic...the watch was nice, so was the dispatcher in the dimly lit room.  So I went with Dan Howard only because it was taken on one of Maine's, and New England's, and the East's best offerings for railfans and family.  Stub switches--even a three way switch, real steam locomotives and cars, and two Ford Model T's fitting the rails, too. along an original right of way.  The trip to it is as much fun as the trip on it.  If Dan only gets the WW&F good publicity, he's done it well!

I'll look for it on Facebook or Twitter.

(If possible, it would be convenient to have the next theme on the page when we vote on current.)

Thanks for getting back to me.

Hi guys,

There will be an announcement here in the forums, every Monday, for either the upcoming theme or the current vote. You can also find the info in the Trains newsletter, as well as on the Trains Facebook and Twitter sites.

I will make sure these continue to be updated.

This whole thing has gotten messed  up.  The Trains online newsletter usually has the info now and now it never shows up on the Forum's threads...cannot seem to be able to connect the two together anymore.   It's up to Drew Halverson, I think ,to get to get things straightened out.  DREW!  HELP!!

Drew,

Where does one see the announcement for next week's "trackside with trains" topic?

Best,

Richard

John,

Mr. Howard, along with any winner who is featured in the print publication, will be paid accordingly.

henry6,

You can see the results here:

http://trn.trains.com/Trackside/2014/03/Vol%20231%20Green%20railroad%20photos.aspx

There was never a forum post set up that week unfortunately. I was out of the office.

Regarding Robert Howard's nice photo, TRAINS writes:"His photo of the Illinois Terminal heritage unit will be featured in an upcoming issue of Trains magazine." Will Mr. Howard be paid anything by Trains for publishing his nice photo?

OK.  And how do we view last week's results?  There was only the announcement of the post in the Trains' on line newsletter once and not here on the General Discussion Forum.  Today the next round is announced and the winner's name was announced but no link to go back and review the contest and see the comments.  DREW PLEASE FIX THIS!
