What does coke look like?

How must it be transported over the rail ... open hoppers or enclosed?

Thanks

Most of it is for the production of steel. There's numerous grades produced, as they need it to burn at different temperatures, or different levels of ferocity, depending on what the steel type is, or how it is being made. Sometimes it arrives to a large mill as a type of coal, and is then processed on-site, and made into coke. The trains that go to Chicago for example, mainly go to the large mills around the lower Lake Michigan area. This is the coke facility at USS Gary Works in Gary, IN.

I don't believe they receive the CSX train, but I do think some of the mills a little farther up the Lake do.

not 100% ture...some of the coke comes off of nevil island which is csx and the PIRR territory....not as much as what comes off the Union..but about 15 to 20 cars a day....
on a side note..coke also use to come from koppers coke comp on the csx mon sub..but that was lost to the W&LE a few years back..now they spot the emptys and pull the loads....

Needs covered hoppers with inhalation hazard placards. Also "no sampling" placards.....

Do ship any of it to abrasives companies like Norton, Exolon or any other silicon carbide manufacturers?

Hello everybody,

When I was in Fostoria, I saw a large string of loaded coke hoppers on a CSX manifest. I have seen also unit coke trains.

Where does all that coke go?
Andrew
