Possibly Inspiration for Heritage-I paint scheme

Just ran across this while surfing. If you didn't know better you'd think this was a modern day locomotive of the BNSF!

change that side lettering to BNSF and you've got it...that might be why it's called heritage.

Well, those are Great Northern Y-1 electrics, pictured as seen in May of 1953, so it is more than a remote possibility!

That paint scheme looks an awful lot like the one I saw on a BNSF SD 40-2 yesterday.And also like the scheme I saw on a GN F7 in 1969.

As you may recall, the first version of the Heritage 1 paint scheme was green and orange, period.

Mark Lynn, author of the book "Warbonnets" and, at that time, a Texas-based BNSF roadmaster, wrote BNSF CEO Rob Krebs and said the paint scheme lacked the yellow separating stripes, a la GN. Krebs read the letter aloud to several operating officials, agreed, and ordered the yellow stripes added.

I just got back from five days on Marias Pass where, in my opinion, the Heritage 1 paint scheme looks best...especially on the repainted SD40-2's. If the ghosts of GN railroaders past still inhabit the rails at places like Spotted Robe, Grizzly, Ft. Piegan, Java East and Red Eagle, I'm sure they agree....

I agree,heritage 1 is far better than heritage 2.

Since I am only 21, I don't remember the GN; and as such, I personally prefer the Heritage II. Heritage I is not bad, but I like the larger yellow stripes.
