To me, notch eight only works with a diesel, because it does.

Wide open on a steam engine, some of the old steam fellows I knew would call it having it, "to the roof".

True that.  With a Diesel, I'd expect to see either a little smoke, or at least a "heat plume" above the locos.

To me, "wide open" connotes "notch eight."  To that end, only the steamers fit the bill.

I also liked A. J. Schewan's picture because it took me back to the days when there were still cabooses on every train and I occasionally rode them deadheading or as a flagman or even a conductor a few times.  A time now long gone.

A. J. Schewan's shot through the "wide open" caboose door caught my fancy.  Lots of nice photos were submitted, but I thought this was the most interesting, and least conventional.
