For what it's worth, the tree symbol is the corporate symbol for the Boise Cascade lumber company.

That's correct, and that points primarily to two affiliated railroads:  the Minnesota, Dakota & Western (MDW) and the International Bridge and Terminal Company (IBT).  I haven't seen the NADX 3100 series (about 74 cars, NADX 3100-3173), but from your picture I suspect that it is an older, smaller box car, so it's probably ex-MDW.  They have several different series that are fairly close to these in size; my best guess is that these cars came from MDW series 9000-9099.

I've seen a number of these box cars while railfaning here in Spartanburg.

The NADX reporting mark belongs to GE. But does anybody know who owned these box cars before GE?
