what do i need to know beforehand about being a conducter trainee

Isn't "conductor" one of the synonyms for 'lightning rod'? ;-}

Seriously, judging by some of the recent information I've seen, be prepared to shell out a considerable amount of money up front for some railroads -- BNSF appears to be one. Their Web site indicates you must complete a course of study -- costing over $4000 -- before they'll look at you as a candidate. No refunds if you aren't accepted...

Of course, there are probably 'other ways' to get a job at these roads -- I don't know, and won't speculate. I do know that Nora, who started the 'stupid question' thread, is in the middle of training (she has suffered a minor setback but will soon be back at it) and can probably give you a highly relevant answer to just about any well-directed questions you may have.

If you want to do it, get off your butt and go submit an application to your nearest RR. That's how everyone else does it. They will tell you what you need to do from there. It's simple. Don't let everyone else help you complicate things. If you want it, go get it.[2c]

please see the postings that are in other treads...anything that starts with wanting to work for the railroad... am i stupid or what.... what is it like.... their are lots and lots of postings from myself and others about what it is like...please go read them for a full responce...my fingers are tired from typing it out evey other day...

Just to clarify...I'm not "in the middle of" anything. There is no guarantee that I will get to go back and try again. I am certainly going to try to get hired again, but I'm essentially back at square one. I'll see what happens.

As for the original question, it's probably different for every rr and I certainly wouldn't be the best person to answer it in any event.
