Mark is on a different plane, no pun intended, in his understanding of railroading, the industry, and its ancillary aspects. It's hard to describe: he's not in the same vein as a computer geek, an introvert who speaks words no one understands; he's not a know-it-all, either. He just grasps this stuff -- that's the simplest way I can put it into words -- and is comfortable conveying his wealth of knowledge verbally and in print with an energy that wasn't seen in the pages of TRAINS since the David P. Morgan era.

I used to think I could write about railroads, until Mark and I started working on some articles for TRAINS. I'm not in the same league. I found out eventually that wasn't so bad, because so few other people are too.

I was always taught "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Terry_C, go to your original post and read the second sentence carefully. That was a mean statement and was not polite!! If you don't want people on the forum to be mean to you, don't be mean in the first place.

I agree with Mark that you should have contacted him directly but if you were going to ask the question on the public forum you should have said something like this.

I noticed M.W. Hemphill answers many questions on the forum, what are his qualifications?

You would have received many polite responses to continue your education.

Smart is good, but more important is 'knowledgeable' which is the real description of Mark. I have worked with a number of very smart people who where short in the knowledge department (yes, it can happen that way) and I can tell you that one knowledgeable person is worth a couple of dozen 'smart' people with little knowledge...maybe more than a couple of dozen.

I agree!

Agreed. I've learned a bit, both about RRs and 'side topics' also.

It is great to have someone on the forum that is as knowledgeable as Mr. Hemphill. He seems to practically have an answer to everything that is asked and keeps everything clear. I only wish I had the knowledge that Mr. Hemphill has because many times I am unable to give an answer to a question because I simply do not know and don't want to simply type something down. We should all feel honored that we have Mr. Hemphill to answer any questions out there. And of course everyone else too, but this thread does have his name on it.

I'm very impressed with Mark's knowledge about the economic/regulator side of railroads. But what do I know. I have been a railfan for 45 years, have a BS degree from the Univ. of Tenn.(1966) and 37 years experince in marketing with five Class I railroads.

I like Mark. He never has a bad thing to say to me even if I keep asking the same question over again (poor memory sometimes on my part). I've noticed that a lot of the questions that doesn't get answered because nobody knows, he can answer.

It's great to have knowledgeable people on the forum, how else are we suppose to learn?

Modelcar, I do second you and confirm you in your rising to this point. This forum under Mark has been a place of civility and decorum, with good and spirited discussion. A place for ideas, oppinions, and no small amout of humor worthy of a good site. Mark does not need us to defend him, however we do believe that the forum is not the place for rancor, hostility or class warfare. As I said one time before this is not a bar.[2c]

Thank you Willy2, JoeKoh, BaltACD, Modelcar for explaining why he knows how to answer so many questions.

Yes, dgwicks, I like to ask questions, and no, you should not be mean about it. That is not nice. Asking lots of logical questions is a family trait, and if you don't ask, you will never learn the answer to the question that your mind was asking.

just keep asking, just keep learning

I didn't post that question for you to be mean to me. Stop being mean. I just wanted to know how he answers so many questions. He must be really smart because I don't think he is pretending, because that would not be nice.

I noticed that M.W. Hempfill answers a lot of questions. Is that because you are really smart, or do you just pretend to be and guess at the answer?

keep asking keep learning
