This is, apparently, a response to (MP173) Ed's request for books for the public library, elsewhere in the forum.  More good possibilities!

Here are a couple of older titles which I recommend: 

William A. Raia, Spirit of the South Shore

Kevin J. Holland, Nickel Plate Road Passenger Service - The Postwar Years

A more recent book:

Edward M. DeRouin, The Pennsy In Chicago.
