Good shot, too. It seems like only yesterday when SD40-2s were so common that we hated them. Now they are getting hard to find and there is talk of saving one[:0] [:)][:)]!

Hey Bergie [:)]

How about the Maersk Sealand 3329 pic for Photo Of The Day. <JIm is still hinting [:D] >

Typically, prodding of this nature gets you nowhere. [:D] This time it did.

It's now the photo of the day.

Enjoy.

I would like to see the locomotive saved, my museum may try to get a former MP/UP SD40-2 with non-dynamic brakes and restore it to MP paint, that would be great but I don't know if this will happen, go 3329!!!

For those who doubt this unit (or others) is worth saving, please remember what happened to the older E units, only a very few have been saved and even fewer are in operable condition.

The SD40=2 is pretty much the last EMD model made before US EPA Regulations 'stifled' the noise levels locomotives could produce....I get out to the Altoona area as much as possible and a big favorite of mine is hearing those SD40-2's working hard in pusher service....Most Class 1's have gone to newer Widecab Power in helper service...CSX uses SD50's on Sand Patch, which are quieter....Savor these pics and sounds of the SD40-2's around Horseshoe Curve...they won't last forever! I submitted my name onto Lance's site several months ago for this effort..I shot this unit leading a hot pigtrain eastbound through Lilly, Pa in the fall of 2002. I shot it again at Enola in the fall of 2003. It was originally Conrail 6358...Conrail's first brand new SD40-2.....It pulled many mainline freights on the CR system, then, was used for helper service in the Altoona area for several years, until repainted into Maersk Colors..it is now roaming the Country once again.....Dave Williams

Santa-Fe painted up a GP-60M for Maersk, It's a blue warbonnet. If you get a chance check out the Athearn model.

yeah, this reminds me of the thousands of WWII aircraft produced...and look at what's around today- handfuls at the most. Throw in old cars, anything. Like they say, "you don't miss em' till they're gone."

We're witnessing what happens to a tough, reliable workhorse after so many miles and years. The bulk of the remaining models starts to fade. The E7 was the most popular passenger locomotive in the U.S, now there is only one left in existence.........in the Strasburg, Pennsylvania Museum.

However, It looks like SD40-2s will survive for a time and will unlikely be extinct. Several Class II railroads have the units and many have been rebuilt. Hopefully Maersk unit will be preserved.

Cheers!

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"

This engine is now 27 years old. SD40-2s haven't been built for 18 years. Where does the time go[:0]?

I've talked to Lance of a couple of his Yahoo Groups. I'm hoping he'll get it, I'm pretty sure I have shots of that unit back in the Conrail Days.
