BELDEN TUNNEL
Posted by D&HRetiree on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 4:29 PM

Before the enlargement work Belden Tunnel was 2,238 ft. long. (I can remember this as the B&B material charge-out form was No. 2238!) The tunnel was shortened when the enlaragement was done.

There is a center shaft and at one time there were hinged doors at the East (RR North) end. The door at the West (RR South) end was added along with a ventilating fan when the tunnel was enlarged to accomodate auto carrirers and double stacks. The intent of the fan and South end door was to ventilate the tunnel of fumes after the passage of a train. I have no idea if the door and fan are used now.

Prior to the enlargement work there were always icicles in the tunnel in the winter and the locomotive assigned to the Binghamton-Albany pair of daily trains had an ice breaker installed above the cab to minimize the icicle danger.

Should answer most of the questons.
