Frisco 1522

I was just watching some movies I took of the old gal and was wondering.....
What would it take to get her running again. I understand what put her down in 2002, mostly insurance costs and it needed flue work to make it FRA complient, but it was Amtrak ceritfied and had just been rebuilt in the late 90's so it isnt in bad shape. I went to the museum this summer and gave it a walk around and it was in great shape, looked like you could put a fire in her now and off you go. The rods had grease on them to protect them and it looked like the stuffed her with the intent it COULD run again. Ive ridden and chased alot of big steam (everything from NW 1218 to the SP 4449) and the 1522 has to be one of the most handsome locomotives to grace the high iron.
Anyone wanna weigh in on this? Long live the Rock!!!

I have a Frisco 1522 video but never saw her run in person. [:(]

The 1500s were well reguarded by Frisco people. One of these days I hope to see her at least in the Museum and hopefully on the road.

I thought I heard that insurance was the major problem.

IF someone with deep pockets wanted to underwrite the insurance policy I bet her crew would be more than ready to return her to the rails. BNSF seems to be amicable to steam pulled employee specials so there could be hope yet.

I saw the engine several times at Galesburg RR Days From time to time it had running gear problems but when it was in good order it was a sweet looking engine -- it somehow looked fast even when standing still. And it had just about the sweetest sounding whistle I have heard. Tough to photograph however: that deep black paint drove my light meter nuts.

Our Frisco 1522, is operation still, we still fire her up every once in a while and run her back and forth on Musuem trackage, but her excursion days are over. Right Now the musuem has gotten title to 750 acres of land, and plans are under way to try to build a loop of track for the 1522 to run on, but the land is rugged and it may take a long time for it to be relized. The 1522 still lives, but for now, her excursion days are over, and the remaining SLSTA members are still devoted to their beloved Frisco 1522. BTW, Did you know the the 1522 was the last choice to them to be restored, they wanted to restore Frisco 1621, Nickle Plate Berkshire, or the Southern Pacific GS1.

How could you fire her up? Shes got plugs in the fire box and FRA needs the boiler recertified. If in fact you have fired up this locomotive it would be VERY illegal. I have talked with several of the SLSTA members and it needs to be reflued to meet new federal requirements. The SLSTA has been disbanded and is no longer an active group. They may move it once in a while to keep the bearings loose but s for steaming it up I asure you that I would have been notified by some of the old crew. I have made friends with these guys back 1986 when they were first restoring her and thay have contacted me everytime they fired her up. If they have Fired her up scince the last run I would like to see some proof. Long live the Rock!!!

Interesting. [;)]

I had not heard the STSTA has been disbanded. Too bad. [:(]

Is there any future at all (other than setting in the museum) for the 1522?
