Vandalism....why ?
Posted by Randy Stahl on Sunday, September 5, 2004 11:37 PM
Today WC 3018 returned from N. Milwaukee with all of the windows smashed . In addition a big pile of turds was left on the rear running boards... Is this some kind of statement? I missed it.. but I didn't miss changing glass,

Why? Shreds of human debris think destroying property (as long as it isn't their's) is fun.

It is a shame that with all the other things to worry about like: 1) Terrorism; 2) Keeping or finding a job; 3) Health concerns; 4) Major crime; etc., etc., etc., that such petty things still happen. I bet the loco must have set somewhere with no one around but the vandals. We will probally never know who or why, and they will live to strike again. [:(!]

Low class people who have no regard for other people's property do this. They should be flogged.

Heh... During the Conrail buy out between NS and CSX, I seen a Conrail SD-60 with "NS Sucks" written in the dust on the gas tank. I found this to be funny cause a mad conrail worker probably put it there.

I can't stand seeing all of those freight cars that vandals seem to think are their personal rolling bill board to try out their artistic (whatever) skills!!

And you wonder how many people can answer: Do you know where your children are?

Its amazing how few people do, and how few think little Johnny are capable of doing that.

Anything clean is a target.

I was in 7th grade, tempted to add my name to a collection on a wall somewhere. My buddy said "Fools names like fools faces, Often appear in public places". Never been tempted to do that again.
Wonder if he knew how much he influenced me!

Bored kids mostly I reckon. "Nothing" to do,, not mature enough to realise the value of property. Dunno as it's the parents fault,, more like society's...

They built the "Extreme" park here in Louisville,so some the people(mostly youngsters)
could have a place to skate, skateboard, ride bikes(personally I'm to old for that) open
24 hrs a day they've had to close it a couple of times to clean up the "graffiti"
The city built this park,so some of these people wouldn't be on the streets.
The ones doing the vandalism, appearantly aren't the ones using it for what it was
built for. What gives?
Is it parents,or society?

Oh,did I mention that OUR tax dollars paid for it,but it is Free to all!

I possibly should add, that the Metro Council,is thinking of passing a law
banning "spray paint" to anyone under the age of 18,a lot like selling
cigarettes to anyone under that age. So far it has gotten favorible reviews,
Won't know the outcome for several weeks.

mistake 1

never blame society for parental issues.

if Society raises your kids, your garbage parents, and then we end up back at the parental issue again

I agree with the paint law locomutt.

To go with the title of the thread, that is the exact reason why the RR museum had to put a fence around their property in Latonia/Covington KY. The vandals were busting and tearing up their equipment.

It is a shame.

bad Parenting I would agree.
But some grffitti I have seen would qualify as art
if unhappy to have it on one's property, use teflon paint like MTA NYC subway.
broken windows don't equal a caining.
I'd make 'em work it off by replacing them.
HA!

And society wonders why children act the way they do: because stupid idiots
decided we cannot spank a child's behind when they do wrong. Don't get
me wrong: I do NOT believe in beating a child, but a good spanking with the
hand, never hurt me that much. Stings some, but never left lasting marks on
my behind.

Now, if you even threaten to spank a child, the child says "You do, and I'll call
the authorities on you for child abuse!"

I think it's a shame, but I'm not really surprised... Some parts on the north end of Milwaukee should be a war zone... people beaten, children drown in a flood-swollen river (and then the parents sue the city), more mob beatings... WC 3018 got off easy! Could've ended up a pile of flaming parts...

I still like the Singapore caning idea...

I've been around North Milwaukee watching trains, but have been advised (with good reason!) to watch my surroundings while railfanning. I've never had any problems, and I've never witnessed any "activity", but will gladly report it if I see it.

You obviously have never run afoul of whatever your local version of Child Protective Services is called. Have witnessed this; Daughter smears eyemakeup around, tells teacher father hit her, father gets visit from CPS and is told he will be sent to jail if any further complaints. No trial, no appeal, no defense.

Also, consider that beginning at first grade, your kids spend more time with somebody else than they do with you. Have you managed to teach your kids what you want them to know by the time they are six?

Hopefully you have given them a healthy interest in trains by then so that when you ask them, "Where have you been?" they will truthfully answer "Watching trains!"

Vandalism....why?

For the same reason people climb mountains....because it's there.

When you have nothing else to occupy your time productively, human nature is to find unproductive things to do to occupy that time.

Today's single parent, and both parents working, families leave the kids with too much unsupervised time on thier hands. Any child, from those that are just able to walk to those that are collecting Social Security retirements, need access and encouragement to occupy thier time productively.

Vandals don't value the property the vandalize because they don't value themselves.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

[V][V][V][V] I seriously doubt that Kids trashed the 3018. I think that it was more likely unhappy railroaders. But check the morning reports to see if I'm wrong. [V][V][V][V]

Many people are egotistical. Knowing that they can do an evil deed that will be a hardship on someone else also makes them mean and enjoying it makes them just plain sick. The Lord came to redeem such as these.

A couple of years ago, out near Perris, there were several boxcars on a siding, with maybe a dozen empty spray paint cans on the ground. Plenty of "fresh" graffiti on those cars.

In my early years I was friends with some kids who grew up to be thieves and vandals (cars). They even went to church every Sunday but there was no "carry-over" from the sermons to the outside world (but the local 7-11's candy inventory was safe for a few hours each Sunday morning). Their Dad ran around on their Mom; the kids had little respect for property. I don't have an easy answer to the "why" they turned to vandalism...plinking street lights; throwing rocks, etc. but the periodic punishment they got in their pre-teen years did nothing to fix their behavior.
